The Deputy Training Safety Officer (DSTO) Bovington is accountable
for ensuring their team adhere and conform with all agreed DIO Top
level budget holders (TLB) processes and operating procedures, and
particularly those which are detailed under the key infrastructure
process.

The DTSO Bovington is responsible for day-to-day delivery of a safe
training environment and ranges for authorised users, under the
direction of his Training Safety Officer (TSO), in order to support the
endorsed and contingent training requirements of Defence.

The post holder will comply with Defence Safety Authority Ordanance,
Munitions and Explosives (DSA OME) Defence code of Practice and
Guidance for Ranges Safety.
at all times and assist in the management of ordnance, munitions
and explosives (OME) MoD Explosive Regulations.

The post holder is responsible for the supervision of ranges and
complex all-arms dry training and therefore requires current military
experience to understand military procedures for such live firing and
complex dry training so that the user achieves optimum safe training
benefit whilst ensuring optimal usage of the training estate.

The wearing of military uniform or branded civilian uniform may be
required. Reasonable overtime / Time off In Lieu (TOIL) working
patterns, duty / on call periods, routine night and weekend working
will be a requirement of the role.

Main Responsibilities
DSA OME Part 3 Ranges and JSP 375 to all ranges and training areas.

  • Brief and advise users on safety procedures, use of weapons &
pyrotechnics, conduct of training and how to achieve optimum training
benefit.

  • Monitor compliance with the published Standing Orders & current
civil legislation.

  • Contribute to all range management and training related safety
issues including production of all risk assessments.

  • Support the TSO in ensuring all Standing Orders for Training and
instructions for visiting units are in-date.

  • Support and advise all mandatory range and training inspections and
enact all recommendations as appropriate.

  • Assist in the management of OME in accordance with JSP 48
  • Manage users' aspirations and assist in the management of bids and
allocations on BAMS for Bovington Training Area.

  • Assist in the coordination of the rural estate management of
Bovington Training Area and the maintenance & development of the
military training facilities.

  • Support maintenance of the ecological and environmental
sustainability of the training area consistent with environmental
designations.

  • Support of the TSO in managing internal and external stakeholders
and safeguard the reputation of the MOD.
