We have an exciting opportunity for two Researchers to join amazing projects within the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Bath.

You will be part of the University's new Institute for Sustainability, with the opportunity to collaborate with the UK's new Industrial Decarbonisation Research and Innovation Centre (IDRIC).

These opportunities are outlined below, and further information about each role can be found in the Job Descriptions.


Research Associate 1:


As part of the UK FIRES project, you will be developing the analysis tools and outputs needed to identify opportunities for UK industry to reach zero emissions.

As part of this, we have developed a detailed map of material production and transformation through UK industry, supported by new tools for managing data (such as with Semantic Web technologies) and reconciling material flows.

In this role you will further develop and validate this map against other sources, and use it to explore the impacts of changes in how we use carbon-intensive materials in products.

As this work forms the basis for several other strands of research, including the C-THRU project below, you will have good opportunities to build links to other research activities.

This role is full time from early 2023 with an expected end date of March 2024.


Research Associate 2:

About You:

We are looking for applicants who have a PhD or equivalent relevant experience, in industrial ecology, chemical engineering, data science, or related areas


You will also need:

  • Experience of manipulating, processing and interpreting data in a transparent and reproducible way.
  • Familiarity with Python for data analysis and manipulation, or relevant experience in other programming languages and a willingness and ability to transfer this to working in Python.
  • Ability to organise and prioritise your own workload.
  • Excellent oral, interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work within a team.
You will also need some experience in life cycle assessment, material flow analysis, or industrial decarbonisation.
