    Job summary

    The Pathology Department at TheMid Yorkshire Hospitals is looking for Phlebotomy, Anti-Coagulation, Specimen Receptionand Point of Care Manager.

    The MidYorkshire Hospitals Trust covers three Hospitals, Pinderfields at Wakefield,Pontefract and Dewsbury Hospitals. The post holder will be part of thePathology Management Team and in association with the Deputy Director ofOperations -Pathology and Head of Clinical Services have the role of developingthe service to meet the needs of the Trust. The Phlebotomy service covers all 3hospital as well as community clinics and home visits, working alongside theanti-coagulation service. Point of Care Service is a rapidly developing withnew tests and technology across the 3 sites.

    With a management or professional qualification atpost-graduate level or equivalent, you should bring strong operationalmanagement experience gained within the health service. The proven ability tolead and inspire teams to deliver excellent patient-focused services is alsoessential. The idealcandidate will be someone with the vision, drive, proven leadership experienceand excellent organisational skills to maintain service requirements. Theability to motivate and encourage all staff groups through a period ofsignificant change is essential.

    Main duties of the job

    Tomanage the staff and scientific and technical activities of the Phlebotomy, Specimen Reception, Anti-Coagulation and Point of Care department on all sites. To carry outmanagement of Pathology Staff band 2 to7 and support grade staff within that department. To carry out specialised orcomplex work as required.

    Job responsibilities

  • The post-holder will be responsible for the management and organisation of the scientific and technical services of Phlebotomy, Specimen Reception, Anti-Coagulation and Point of Care department within Pathology across the Trust.
  • Key objectives include ensuring that:
  • Ensure Phlebotomy, Specimen Reception, Anti-Coagulation and Point of Care department provides a high quality and timely service to all users
  • High professional and technical standards, ( Departmental Standard Operating Procedures, Trust and National Policies) , are promoted and maintained at all times for all staff under theirmanagement, and in line with the UKAS guidelines and compliant with the Blood Safety and Quality Regulations 2005 (BSQR)
  • That all Biomedical Scientists, POCT staff, Specimen Reception and Phlebotomist grades under their management (within the department) fully understand, work to, and implement the agreed departmental procedures and policies set out by the Pathology Service Manager, Deputy Director of Operations -Pathology and Clinical Head of Department. That staff fully understand, work to, and implement all other authorised policies and procedures (including health and safety procedures)
  • The training and mentoring requirements of all the staff are identified through the appraisal system, and met, in order to achieve the overall aims of the individuals and the department.
  • Service developments to improve effectiveness are identified, assessed and where appropriate implemented after consultation with the Clinical Head of Department and Deputy Director of Operations -Pathology
  • New policies and procedures are developed, documented, and changes implemented to policies or working practices of the department, as agreed with the Deputy Director of Operations -Pathology and/or Clinical Head of Department as appropriate.

    Qualifications

    Essential

  • Biomedical Science degree or equivalent
  • MSc or equivalent in relevant discipline.
  • Post graduate management qualification or equivalent experience
  • Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) with evidence of on-going participation in CPD.
  • Desirable

  • Understanding of quality management systems
  • Root Cause Analysis Training
  • Experience

    Essential

  • Demonstrable operational management experience in the health service, with previous experience of effectively managing groups of staff.
  • Experience of managing a budget
  • Working across and leading Trust wide projects
  • Demonstrates a high level of numerical and data analytical skills, including spreadsheets and databases
