    JOB SUMMARY

    To provide support, information and advice to women recalled for further investigations and subsequent referral for treatment through the breast screening process, ensuring that women receive the highest standard of clinical care and have access to the full resources of the multi-professional team.

    Main duties of the job

  • To assess each woman individually regarding their psychological needs and where support needs are identified making the appropriate intervention or referral.
  • To ensure each woman and her family, if appropriate, have access to the appropriate information
  • Ensure patients' safety
  • Quality within the breast service
  • Attend the weekly MDT and co-ordinate patient care accordingly
  • Work in line with the requirements outlined by quality assurance and attend quality assurance meetings
  • Participate in health promotion work; in house and in the community
  • Participate in audit, research and service development with the screening role and in collaboration with the wider breast care team

    Detailed job description and main responsibilities

    CLINICAL ROLE

  • To practice autonomously, being accessible for first line support to those women recalled for assessment
  • To provide supportive information to women recalled for assessment, prior
  • during, and following further investigation of possible screen detected

    abnormalities and initiate care pathway

  • To develop efficient and effective ways of providing a high standard of
  • patient care and utilisation of available resources

  • Utilise a wide range of communication skills to address the complex needs
  • of patients and their families during the assessment process

  • Communication is a fundamental process to ensure continuity and high
  • standards of care. It includes sharing ideas, information and feedback in

    order to empower patients and members of the interdisciplinary team.

  • Skilled in communicating with a range of people on a daily basis some of
  • who may have communication barriers

  • The post holder must also communicate with other staff within the Trust,
  • with external organisations and with the general public

  • To provide expert support to patients/families through screening and
  • assessment for breast cancer and identify adverse responses to the

    screening experience referring on as appropriate

  • To demonstrate an in depth knowledge of the National Breast Screening
  • Programme and specialist care in breast disease

  • To support women through 'breaking bad news' consultation and refer to
  • other health care professionals as appropriate

  • Have the ability to pass on sensitive/distressing information and providing
  • reassurance and guidance for clients constantly

  • To be aware of current media coverage issues relating to breast disease
  • and deal with patient enquiries appropriately

  • To be an active core member of the breast screening multidisciplinary
  • team

  • Provide clinically technical procedures i.e. Dressings and venepuncture
  • EDUCATION ROLE

  • To act as an expert resource to other health care professionals, breast
  • multidisciplinary team members, general public, patients and their families

  • To be aware of the educational needs of women with regard to breast
  • awareness and health promotion

  • Develop and deliver training and education programmes for health care
  • professionals, relating to the National Breast Screening Programme

    MANAGEMENT ROLE

  • Draws on knowledge on a range of theories to inform practice. Develops
  • strategies for the management and delivery of care for Breast Cancer and

    Breast Screening patients

  • To be responsible for the co-ordination and delivery of results to women
  • who have attended for assessment

  • To be part of a specialist team of nurses working alongside Macmillan
  • Breast Care Nurse/Breast Care Nurse providing continuity of care during

    periods of annual leave, study leave and sickness

  • To coordinate and manage the one stop symptomatic breast clinics
  • Ensuring the patient experience is of high quality

  • To maintain clinical records and integrate them into the Breast Screening
  • Computer System

  • To develop and implement policies and procedures relevant to the Breast
  • Screening assessment process

  • To maintain a flexible approach, according to the needs of the service to
  • ensure all assessment clinics are supported by a nurse

  • Manage stores and supplies in area of practice
  • Attend multidisciplinary team meetings and record findings, and passing
  • these findings on to clients

    IMPROVING QUALITY

  • The post holder must at all times work in accordance with the NMC Code
  • of Professional Conduct (2002)

  • Leads in research, audit and quality initiatives
  • Participates in the development of evidence based practice and ensures
  • That clinical practice in Breast Support Nursing is based on the latest

    available clinical evidence to provide optimum patient care

  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the Trust's programme of
  • nursing audit and leads as appropriate in the quality audit cycle

  • Evaluates the quality of own and others work and raises quality issues and
  • related risks with the relevant people

  • Supports the introduction and maintenance of quality systems and
  • processes in own work area

  • Ensures documentation is accurate and up to date and monitors and
  • promotes high standards of nursing documentation within the team

  • Makes informed decisions in the provision of care to the patient group by
  • using knowledge of resource management information

  • As an expert practitioner evaluates the quality of patient care and ensures
  • that the results of evaluation are used to sustain or improve quality of

    patient care

  • To remain updated, ensuring clinical practice is research and evidence
