    Job summary

    Do you fancy a career and not just a job? Are you aninquisitive person? Then a job in clinical coding at County Durham & Darlington NHS Foundation Trust maybejust for you. You will investigate and decipher from the electronic patient record diagnosis, comorbidities, procedure and interventions and translate these terms into codes to reflect the patientsInpatient/ daycase stay. The data we collate is then used to generate income and national statistics. Therole requires a lot of training, time and dedication however it is extremely rewarding and interestingas not a day is ever the same with new procedures and techniques used in the evolving healthcaresetting which you will research. You will start your career as a band 3 which will require you tocomplete/pass the clinical coding standards course, you will then learn a multitude of specialities overa 2 year period at this time if we feel you are ready you will sit an internal assessment/auditto move you to a band 4, Hybrid working opportunties will be considered at thispoint (band 4) you can then study and sit the NCC Qualifiaction to attain yourband 5 status. Refresher training is also required every 3 years.

    Main duties of the job

    The post holder will have the responsibiltyfor the coding of a multitude of specialities by extracting information fromvarious clinical documents in the electronic patient record and translatinginto diagnostic (ICD-10) and procedure coding (OPCS Specialities includeSurgery, Breast Surgery, ENT, Opthalmology, Oral, Dermatology, Urology,Gynaecology and Medicine

    We provide hospital services from two acute sites - Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham. We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes.

    Job responsibilities

    Accuratlyassigning ICD-10 and OPCS codes to all Inpatient and Daycase activityusing the Trust`s electronic patient record. You will be expected to mentorless experienced staff, this may involve liasing with clinical and clericalstaff. You will also be expected to participate in audits

  • Experience of working to targets and key performance indicators to meet deadlines
  • Experience of work requiring high degree of accuracy
  • Desirable

  • Experience of using either Paper and Electronic records to extract clinical information
  • Experience in using E-Record PAS System - Cerner Milennium , other IT systems
  • Experience of working in an acute hospital setting
  • Previous practical Coding experience (up to 2 years in a range of specialities)
  • Experience of the medical records process
  • Experience of working in the NHS
  • Special Skills and Knowledge

  • Understanding of the NHS recent reforms - Caldecott guardians , Freedom of Information Act, Data Protection Act.

  • 5 GCSE`s at Grade C or above are required, Including English and Maths or equivalent qualification
