Are you a qualified Play Specialist with a Foundation degree in Healthcare Play Specialism and experience of working with children or young people in a healthcare environment?

If the answer is Yes, then we have the job for you

We are seeking a qualified play specialist who is passionate about engaging with children through play and exploration.

You will support children and young people to settle into the hospital environment and enable them to make sense of treatment and interventions.

You must practice with an non judgemental approach and have the ability communicate effectively with children of all ages and their families using a range of skills, resources and demonstrating active listening.


You will utilise your specialist skills to prepare children for procedures, helping them to understand why things are happening and what they will involve, you will use distraction techniques during treatment and provide post procedural play to aid the child's psychological and emotional recovery.


As a Play specialist you will lead the development of play provisions, utilising theoretical knowledge and evidence based practice to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the therapeutic play interventions provided to all children.

You must have a professional attitude, be dynamic and forward thinking to join our children's directorate

Play is a seven day service, morning to evening time, across Heartlands & Good Hope Hospital.


Main duties, tasks & skills required:
Children age 0-16 are admitted with acute illness, chronic illness, learning disabilities, safeguarding requirements and mental health needs. Meeting the holistic, individualised needs of all the children is an essential part of a play specialist role.


You will perform therapeutic assessments, design activities to meet individual needs, deliver therapeutic play interventions to support children during medical/surgical procedures.

Create an environment that encourages play which in turn meets the psychological and emotional needs of the patient. You will assist in arranging larger play events and entertainment for the paediatric service.

Improve resources and facilities to ensure the environment is child friendly and promotes a playful, interactive experience.


You must be able to communicate effectively and confidently with children, young people and their families whilst demonstrating empathy and compassion.


You must have knowledge and understanding of child safeguarding issues, encourage an environment of professional curiosity and report any concerns relating to child protection issues to the nurse in charge.


In collaboration with the Senior Sister you will plan the Play Team duty roster, complete staff appraisals and support professional development plans for the team.


Within this role you will work closely with the multi-disciplinary team and contribute to the care of all children and families within Paediatrics.
