Under the direction of the Class Teacher, to provide support and assistance in the development and education of students in our school, by undertaking tasks related to classroom activities and providing basic supervision and care skills.


Key accountabilities, duties and responsibilities

Support for students

  • To assist in the supervision of students within and outside the classroom including in playgrounds, communal areas or on visits outside the school premise
  • To provide simple medical aid as and when necessary, and take all reasonable measures to ensure health and safety in the classroom and other relevant areas within and outside the school premises
  • To provide care, attend to student's personal needs and undertake activities necessary to meet the physical, emotional and educational requirements of individual students utilising a wide range of skills, with support and supervision from teaching staff and other professionals including speech therapist, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, school nurse
  • To assist in supervising the activities of individual and small groups of students, who have complex needs, in order to ensure their safety, facilitate their education development and develop a supportive and caring relationship
  • To assist in physical tasks relating to the care of students and their individual personal and therapy needs; this includes swimming on a weekly basis

Support for teachers

  • To undertake other relevant duties allocated including input to the monitoring and reviewing of work programmes
  • To support the teaching and learning of students by working with the teacher to deliver the curriculum
  • Maintain records of student's progress as instructed by the class teacher including input to monitoring and reviewing of work programme
  • To prepare display materials and teaching aids, undertake simple maintenance and repair and clean and tidy up after use
  • To undertake other relevant duties allocated at the discretion of the class teachers or members of the senior management team
  • Recordkeeping and filing
  • Classroom display; Class Teachers will make professional decisions in determining what material is displayed in and around the classroom.

Support for the school

  • To assist in the supervision of students outside the classroom including in playgrounds, communal areas or on visits outside the school premises
  • To observe students as individuals and in groups and monitor and report back to teaching staff on problems, progress and possible developmental needs utilising specialist knowledge and experience
  • To prepare and operate computers and other equipment and undertake any other simple practical tasks on equipment used as teaching aids
  • To prepare display materials and teaching aids, undertake simple maintenance and repair, and clean and tidy up after use
  • To assist and provide support to less experienced teaching assistants as and when required
  • To undertake other relevant duties allocated at the discretion of the classroom teacher, Head of
Education Provision (HoEP) or members of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT)


Employees may be required to support

To be prepared to be trained for and to then provide, personal care which could include toileting, feeding, manual handling and medical procedures.

All necessary training and competencies will be undertaken prior to the duties being required.

  • Supporting students when they become upset and may display challenging behaviour
  • Support safe physical intervention when a pupil is at risk of hurting themselves or others which can carry a risk of being bitten, scratched, hit kicked or spat at
  • Taking groups of students off site without a teacher and being solely responsible; this can include being asked to act as a driver for staff with the appropriate driving licence and experience
  • Being responsible for all students on the school bus, include strapping down all wheelchairs safely and securely, when working as the driver on outings
