Salary:
£31,931 - £44,166 per annum (Higher banding depends on experience).
Allowances:
Specialist Allowance of up to £5000 per annum

We currently have a fantastic opportunity for a mechanical design engineer to deliver engineering projects on the ISIS Muon and Neutron Source particle accelerator equipment.
This will include working with both our existing accelerator and the potentialnext version, ISIS-II, which will be an all-new accelerator, currently in concepts stages.
You will work closely and collaborate with leading scientists in the field and work on a broad range of accelerator technology.
You will also be working closely withscientists, technicians and fellow engineers to specify, design, develop and procure bespoke mechanical and electrical equipment for the particle accelerator.
You will be involved in full lifecycle engineering from concept to commissioning of one-off components and larger, sophisticated systemsThis will include:
- Mechanical engineering calculations and analysis.
- Precision tolerances.
- Alignment and design for manufacturing.
- Design of radiofrequency cavities and accelerating structures.
- Design of AC or DC electromagnets.
- Design of ultrahigh vacuum assemblies.
Person Specification
Essential:
- Degree/Higher National Diploma or above, or equivalent experience
- Knowledge of fundamental mechanical engineering principles, e.g. materials, stress/strain, fluid mechanics, heat transfer
- Experience in a mechanical design environment: managing projects, and developing, designing, procuring, testing and reporting on the development of technically complicated engineering equipment
- Experience in performing engineering calculations and simulations
- Excellent communication & interpersonal skills, particularly within collaborating, negotiating, networking and team building/leading
Desirable:
- Master of Engineering in relevant engineering field
- Indepth knowledge in charged particle beams, radiofrequency cavities, magnetic elements (AC or DC), or ultrahigh vacuum engineering
