Job description:
Defra's Delivery Unit (DU) was set up in January 2023 as a new, powerful capability at the heart of Defra to drive forward the department's ambitious agenda.
Defra's DU focuses on core elements of the Secretary of State's (SoS) delivery priorities - climate change, farming, biodiversity and water.
It works as an integral part of Defra, acting as the guardian of the SoS's delivery priorities and the associated tools and techniques for getting things done.
As such, the unit works very closely with the SoS, her wider Ministerial team, the Permanent Secretary, and Director Generals to drive forward tangible progress through others.
Currently the DU comprises of around 20 staff, split across two branches:
- Delivery Unit (operations)
- this branch of the unit focuses on working with Defra's Arms-Length Bodies to focus on capturing key data and metrics to drive progress towards outcomes and developing a consistent, data driven overview of delivery performance and operational activity within the Defra Group.
- Delivery Unit (priorities) this branch of the unit focuses on the SoS's delivery priorities, supporting the SoS by providing independent insight and undertaking impartial analysis of data to drive progress towards delivery of outcomes.
We are recruiting for an SEO to support the strategy leads in the DU Operations team, working collaboratively across strategy and analytical colleagues in the DU.
Main responsibilities include:
- Supporting a portfolio of work, working with the department to develop deep knowledge in your area that enables you to focus on key metrics in the area that will unlock progress
- Working on the iteration of the data dashboards, thinking about which data and information is most key to allow the DU and the SoS to track and drive progress
- Working closely with the policy and analysis teams, building strong, trusted relationships, balancing departmental interests and pressures with the need to quickly drive progress for the SoS
- Working collaboratively across Strategy Group to ensure join up and provide a seamless service to the department
Contributing to written briefings for the SoS, ministers, and senior leaders, balancing a critical independent view with the departmental view - ensuring that the department is on board at all times.

We are looking for a self-motivated, organised and proactive person who is enthusiastic about driving progress alongside senior leadership to deliver impactful change.
- You will enjoy working with and using data to help make decisions. You will also be able to look beyond the data, understand what it means in practice and think about real world implications
- You will be an effective problem solver; you can see through the problems that the team might face and identify quick but well thought out solutions
- You will have strong organisation skills
- You will be able to work under pressure and at pace, and understand how to build your own resilience to work in these conditions without it affecting you or your colleagues negatively
