Defence Journalist - Portsmouth, United Kingdom - The Smartlist

    Default job background
    Permanent
    Description

Do you have a keen interest in the armed forces and the UK's national security and a passion for writing the stories that matter with our readers?

National World is looking for a defence reporter with a knowledge of the key issues, a depth of good contacts and the ability to tell stories in any format.

Initially building on our established success covering the Royal Navy from its home in Portsmouth, we are looking to grow our defence reporting outside the city and into the other armed forces to provide a more comprehensive coverage across our titles around the UK.

Already living in a world of social media, you will have a grasp of SEO and a natural understanding of what makes great digital content, from trending defence issues to the stories which make a difference. You will be as comfortable writing as you are producing videos, working on podcasts, publishing newsletters and recording your own pieces to camera as a voice of authority.

The News has a proud heritage in reporting on the Royal Navy. But we are looking for someone with the skills and confidence to start widening our coverage beyond Portsmouth and creating a team of trusted contributors who can add to our in-depth story-telling on all defence matters.

You will have the hunger to learn, develop and embrace change as our business grows.

Who are we looking for? Successful candidates will:

  • Have a deep understanding of what drives audiences with the ability to produce fast, accurate and engaging content
  • Demonstrate the ability to follow analytics, identify content trends and come up with original content ideas
  • Be comfortable in a fast-paced media environment but have the organisational skills to plan ahead
  • Have an ability to build strong contacts and relationships
  • Skills/experience

  • A team player: able to work closely with colleagues with various specialities
  • Experience of working in a newsroom, agency or on a digital platform
  • An understanding of how tone impacts brand values
  • Understanding of SEO principles and best practice
  • Familiarity with photo/video editing tools
  • Good interview skills and a tenacity to find the right person to talk to
  • A good knowledge of media law and the Editors Code of Practice
  • NCTJ qualification or equivalent experience
  • Strong writer, storyteller and communicator
  • National World is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive environment as an equal opportunity employer. Consideration will be given to flexible working and job share options for all roles.
