The Post

The post sits within the Communications, Marketing and Recruitment Directorate, which provides a wide range of services to internal and external stakeholders and works closely with the University's senior management team.

We ensure the University's strategic messages are effectively conveyed to, and understood by, our stakeholders across all communications platforms.


The Student Communications Officer will work as part of the professional service offered by the Directorate's award-winning Communications team, in support of strategic communication requirements aligned with the University's strategic plan.


The postholder will enhance the student experience by managing new and innovative engagement initiatives and communications that support students throughout their University journey.


The postholder will also work closely with colleagues from the wider directorate including Marketing and Digital teams, and more widely across the University, including senior colleagues; Faculties; Student Support Services, Information Services, Esates and Campus Services and Commercial Services to develop and deliver integrated marketing-communications projects which enhances the current student experience.


The postholder will report to the Head of Communications and will work closely in partnership with the Internal Communications Officer.


The post should attract a confident, creative, tenacious self-starter who thrives on building strong internal networks and is able to coordinate effective communications that capture the attention of students and increases engagement with a diverse range of university activity.

They will provide advice and guidance on communication best practice and campaign plans, have experience of developing content with impact and of working with stakeholders at all levels.

This role will be based at the University of Stirling campus.

Agile working is supported and the post holder will need to be able to commute to the University when required.


Description of Duties

  • Research, write, edit and proofread on brand copy for a wide range of internal communications platforms (including internal newsletters, digital screens, campaign copy, social media and the website) ensuring they are fit for purpose, uptodate and relevant
  • Build relationships with a variety of internal stakeholders in Faculties and Professional Services to advise and recommend on the effective communication of their messages to students, including advising them on timing, channels and content
  • Coordinate and distribute regular student communications, across a range of platforms
  • Assist with the development and ongoing support of student voice initiatives
  • Support the promotion of national and institutional student experience surveys (including National Student Survey (NSS), Stirling Experience Survey and Postgraduate Taught Survey) to encourage engagement and participation
  • Editorial control of relevant sections of the internal student portal
  • Contribute to social media platforms for current student communications, including content creation, working with the Social Media team
  • Review and evaluate student engagement with messaging and activity
  • Working with the Internal Communications Officer to represent the Directorate on committees and working groups
  • Support students with relevant and timely communications throughout their student journey from enrolment to graduation with relevant and timely information
  • Work as part of the wider communications team responsible for emergency response and crisis communications
  • Adopt a flexible approach to work and be prepared for an occasional requirement to provide a communications service out of hours
  • Participate in the general activities of the Communications team as required and specified by the Head of Communications, and Executive Director of Communications, Marketing and Recruitment

Essential Criteria

  • Educated to Degree level or equivalent (where no formal qualifications are held, additional, relevant experience is required over and above the experience noted below)
  • Substantial recent experience working in communications or stakeholder engagement
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Experience of managing internal comms platforms
  • Proven track record of writing engaging, accurate and impactful copy
  • Ability to oversee the production of video content, including storyboarding, scriptwriting, filming, editing and art direction
  • Proven track record, and demonstrable evidence, of working on effective, integrated internal communications campaigns
  • Ability to work with and engage effectively with a range of different stakeholders
  • Be a highlymotivated, creative and flexible individual
  • Excellent planning and organisational skills
  • Ability to work
