Role title:
Academic SEN Mentor


Reports to:
SENCo and the Centre Manager


Purpose of role:
To help pupils overcome behavioural, social or emotional problems that are affecting their learning


Key responsibilities:

Ÿ Implementing strategies and supporting learners in self-esteem and confidence-building activities

Ÿ Listening to and helping learners resolve a range of issues that are creating barriers to learning

Ÿ Drawing up agreed action plans with learners, outlining the aims of the mentoring, and monitoring their progress

Ÿ Monitoring attendance and punctuality of learners

Ÿ Advising parents on behaviour strategies and parenting skills

Ÿ Networking with other learning mentors, teachers and relevant external agencies

Ÿ Organising drop-in 'offload' sessions for learners, where they can talk about a particular issue

Ÿ Maintaining accurate records and preparing written reports and evaluations

Ÿ Managing your own professional development through undertaking relevant training and sharing best practice with other learning mentors

Ÿ Planning and delivering lessons as per the request of centre management

Ÿ Providing cover for lessons in the absence of colleagues


Required skills:

Ÿ Has experience of working in a SEN secondary school setting as a Learning Mentor with a proven record of reaching children with social, emotional or physical barriers to learning

Ÿ Experience of using the school systems and having had an impact on improving attendance is essential.

Ÿ Qualifications in counselling would also be an advantage but not essential

Ÿ Organisational and time management skills

Ÿ The ability to relate to young people and adults

Ÿ Has the ability to work well under pressure

Ÿ Has a strong understanding of confidentiality and the handling of sensitive information

Ÿ Has a commitment to safeguarding

Ÿ Planning and delivering sessions to pupils is of expected standard

Ÿ Recording incident/accidents and updating pupil records

Ÿ Being creative, innovative and adding value to the curriculum and provision


Salary:
£16,000.00-£19,500.00 per year


Schedule:

  • Monday to Friday

Ability to commute/relocate:

  • Wigan: reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (required)

Education:


  • GCSE or equivalent (preferred)

Experience:


  • Special education: 1 year (preferred)

Licence/Certification:

  • Driving Licence (preferred)
