The post is full time and fixed term to cover maternity leave for up to 12 months or until the substantive postholder returns.

Basic Requirements:


  • Significant, demonstratable experience working under ASPA within an animal facility.
  • Demonstratable knowledge of managing an animal facility.
  • Significant experience as a Home Office Personal Licence holder.
  • NACWO training and qualifications.
  • Experience in control of assigned budgets.
  • Demonstratable knowledge of university and departmental policies and procedures regarding safety, security, personnel matters etc.
  • Knowledge of the control and Management of disease transfer and biosecurity.
  • Practice in managing technical staff and research project in a small to medium sized facility.

Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Responsible for ensuring all existing facilities function in an effective and efficient manner and are compliant with the terms and conditions of the Establishment Licence under the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 198
  • Display a full understanding of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act and other relevant UK legislation to ensure and maintain compliance with Biological Services animal facilities.
  • Communicates clearly and effectively with all levels of staff
  • Trouble shooting and being proactive in resolving issues.
  • Manage special projects to investigate novel techniques, procedures, or equipment to improve support provided by the department.
  • Purchasing of equipment and consumables organising invoices and placing purchase orders.
  • Managing, motivating and developing a team of technical staff to ensure excellent animal service provision to researchers.
  • Contribute to the Animal Welfare and Ethical Review Body (AWERB)
  • Ensure delivery of an effective, high welfare, and highquality service that supports biomedical and biodiversity research programmes.
