    Job summary

    This post is for a Senior Clinical Fellow in General Medicine. The role will be split 40% chief registrar role; 60% clinical practice within allied medical speciality, including pro-rata on-call commitments. This is a post offering an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Medic to join a dynamic, rapidly expanding team delivering multidisciplinary acute care in Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.

    The post holder will be required to work fulltime and will contribute to the ST3+ or IMT3 on-call rota, depending on experience. There may also be an opportunity to experience sub-speciality clinics/procedures, depending on the interest/experience of the post-holder. On-calls paid at banding 1B.

    Applicants must be eligible for full Registration with the GMC at time of appointment.

    Ideally, the successful candidate will have at least 12 months' experience working within the NHS.

    Main duties of the job

    The chief registrar role is a leadership role for senior specialty trainees. The role provides 40-50% protected time to develop and implement local initiatives focusing on, for example, service improvement, engagement and morale, education and training, workforce and sustainability.

    Chief registrars benefit from access to a bespoke development programme provided by the RCP, which runs from September 2022 to June 2023 and comprises five 2-day modules that chief registrars are expected to attend.

    The chief registrar will report to and be mentored by the medical director, a nominated deputy, or other senior clinical leader. The mentor will make a commitment of monthly 1 hour meetings with the chief registrar.

    The chief registrar will also have a named educational supervisor for their role, who may or may not be the same as their clinical supervisor.

    There will be formal educational oversight of the role, with an induction, educational agreement, personal development plan and regular appraisals.

    Job responsibilities

  • Participate in the initial assessment and management of patients, supervising more junior members of the team.
  • To lead inpatient ward rounds to ensure the on-going clinical management of patients is appropriate.
  • To support the discharge of patients, to a place of safety, in a timely manner.
  • Participate in or lead the acute take, to provide senior clinical decisions, with the support of consultant clinicians.
  • Contribute to the Medical Emergency Team (MET). Lead cardiac arrest calls.
  • Contribute to GIM/medical speciality clinics.
  • Liaise with other members of the clinical team and other specialties.
  • Advise junior trainees and ANPs about management of patients.
  • Develop skills in managing the ward to avoid unnecessary patient delays and maintain good clinical care to all patients.
  • To participate in clinical audit and or quality improvement (QI) project.

    Qualifications

    Essential

  • Applicants must hold full registration with the GMC at the time of appointment
  • MB ChB or equivalent medical qualification
  • ALS Certification
  • Completed Foundation Year Programme and/or equivalent medical qualification/experience
  • Completed 2 years' experience in a medical speciality, post Foundation Programme or equivalent experience
  • Completed or part completed UK MRCP examinations or equivalent post-graduate examination
  • Should be ST4 or above
  • Should not already hold a CCT or be within 12 months (ideally not within 18 months) of completion of training on intended start date
  • Must have approval of TPD to apply
  • Evidence of satisfactory / more than satisfactory progress through training, including annual review of competence progression (ARCP) outcomes
