Job summary:


Bilateral Trade Relations (BTR), a directorate within the Department for International Trade, is responsible for opening markets and strengthening the UK's global trading relationships through bilateral Ministerial and government-to-government engagement.


As the UK seeks to develop closer trade and investment relationships with the rest of the world, deliver its new strategic approach to Africa, this is an exciting time to be working on trade policy in Africa.


You will prioritise your work by targeting barriers presenting the most value for the UK and lead a campaign approach focused on resolving barriers to the life sciences sector across a number of markets.


Job description:


This role offers significant opportunities to drive the development and delivery of trade policy in East and Southern Africa as part of BTR's Africa team.

Core responsibilities include progressing work on priority market access issues, driving the utilisation of DIT's digital market access service and the UK's new strategic approach to trade policy across East and Southern Africa.


Key activities and deliverables of the role include:

  • Working with DIT and FCDO colleagues at post to understand the markets, UK business interests, local Government interests and the tools available to HMG to overcome market access barriers;
  • Overseeing trade policy aspects of the UK's bilateral relationships in the region;
  • Preparing briefing, submissions and PQs for Ministers;
  • Embedding DIT's digital market access service in markets across the region;
  • Working closely with posts to develop action plans to overcome market access barriers;
  • Inputting bilateral trade policy priorities into multilateral fora and vice-versa;
  • Leading on the Life Sciences workstream addressing barriers in this sector across Africa; and
  • Managing the commissioning, delivery and actioning of external research in close collaboration with post.

Hybrid working
Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas.


Informal hybrid working arrangements will be available as agreed with the vacancy manager and in line with the requirements of the role.


Most DIT employees will be working a hybrid pattern, spending 2-3 days a week (pro rata) in an office, on average.

If your office location is London, you will be eligible to receive London weighting.

Essential Criteria

Desirable Criteria

  • Some exposure to trade and investment and trade policy would be beneficial but not essential
