    About the Organisation – Judicial College

    The Judicial College is part of the Judicial Office ─ a unique part of the Civil Service, independent from government and dedicated to supporting the judiciary and promoting and safeguarding judicial independence to maintain confidence in the rule of law. The College supports the Lady Chief Justice and Senior President of Tribunals to fulfill their statutory responsibilities for training the judiciary in an evolving justice system. We support the judicial leadership of the College to set strategic direction and advise on the design and delivery of the training programme. We deliver around 2,000 courses to around 23,000 office holders every year. We aim to be a world leader in judicial education.

    This is a permanent post based in Leeds, London or Loughborough.

    Salary and Grade

    This post is Band EO.

    New entrants to the Civil Service will be expected to join on the minimum of the pay range.

    Existing Civil Servants will have their salary calculated in accordance with the Department's pay on transfer / pay on promotion rules.

    Background

    The Chief of Staff Team support the Executive Director and the senior leadership of the College to deliver their corporate roles and responsibilities. You will have the opportunity to assist in several of these areas including finance, business continuity and reward and recognition, as well as other priority projects that arise.

    The team is part of the Strategy, Governance & Change team in the Judicial College. This is a key central team that supports the Senior Leadership of the College including the Executive Director, the three Directors of Training (senior judges from the Courts and Tribunals who provide day-to-day judicial leadership of the programme) and the governing structure of the College. The team leads the College's policy engagement and helps drive forward our strategic objectives.

    Role Purpose

    This is an exciting chance to work in the central and fast-paced Chief of Staff team in the Judicial College. The team supports the Executive Director in the delivery of her corporate responsibilities. Your role will be integral to the efficient running of the College and you will have a unique opportunity to interact with senior leaders, judges and other key stakeholders. The role would suit someone who is looking for a varied role and the potential to use and develop strong organisational and communication skills and a keen eye for detail.

    Main Activities / Responsibilities

    The job holder will be required to undertake the following duties and responsibilities:

    • Maintaining the College budget management process including completing monthly forecasting and financial reporting to the Executive Director and supporting on the Spending Review Cycle.
    • Collaborating with colleagues across the organisation and the Judicial Office's central Business Support Team.
    • Processing invoices, raising and maintaining purchase orders and completing other finance tasks.
    • Supporting the Chief of Staff to brief the College's senior leaders about the budget and finances.
    • Maintaining good record keeping for the Chief of Staff team.
    • Managing and responding to a variety of queries from colleagues across the College and Judicial Office.
    • Providing administrative support to meetings.
    • Supporting the Chief of Staff and Executive Director in the delivery of Staff Engagement and People Survey initiatives across the College.
    • Supporting the wider Chief of Staff team in the delivery of corporate responsibilities, including workforce planning, commercial and learning and development.

    The post may be based at our London, Leeds or Loughborough offices. Some travel to other offices will be required for those based in London or Leeds. Those based in Loughborough will be expected to travel more regularly to the London and Leeds offices to support engagement with the line manager and other members of the Chief of Staff team and wider Strategy, Governance & Change team.

    Essential Skills and Experience

    The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:

    • Excellent organisational skills with keen attention to detail.
    • Experience of working effectively in a team.
    • Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain detailed or technical information in a straightforward way for the audience.
    • Ability to work flexibly, plan a busy workload and respond effectively to changing priorities.
    • Ability to build effective working relationships with internal and external colleagues at all levels and with the judiciary, and understand and manage their needs and expectations.
    • Strong IT skills and ideally familiarity with MS Office, Excel, Outlook and Teams.

    Desirable Skills and Experience

    • Previous business support and/or finance experience and experience analysing data is desirable but not essential.
