Main duties of the job:


  • Share in the provision of the clinical and diagnostic Virology service to the Trust

This includes:

  • Participate in the clinical duties of the department (daily duty and out of hours on call rota on a prorata basis)
  • Participate in clinical MDTs and Virology ward rounds
  • Participate in service development and policy review
  • Contribute to the assessment and introduction of new laboratory assays
  • Participate in the department's quality assurance and governance activities including laboratory and clinical audit scheme, investigating serious clinical and laboratory incidents.
  • Integrate the department's clinical activities with the wider paninfection clinical service.
  • Lead and optimise the department's role in the provision of infection prevention and control expertise including contributions to the emergence and pandemic preparedness responses for the Trust.
  • Lead in the provision of postgraduate clinical training for Infection trainees and clinical scientists.
  • Collaborate with the other consultants in the department to enhance the departments NHS research portfolio with a particular focus on translational research activities that address the emerging clinical needs of our patient population.

Education, Qualifications and Training:


Essential criteria:


  • Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC), or be eligible for registration within six months of interview
  • FRCPath (or equivalent)
  • Applicants that are UK trained, must be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview. Applicants that are nonUK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT. CCT ideally in either Virology Infectious Diseases & Medical Virology Infectious Diseases & Medical Microbiology

Desirable criteria:


  • MRCP (or equivalent)


  • Higher Degree

  • MD, PhD (or equivalent)
  • Formal Training Qualification
  • Management qualification

Knowledge and Expertise:


Essential criteria:


  • Completion of training and extensive experience in Clinical Virology
  • Clinical leadership skills
  • Experience of Teaching Medical Students/Multidisciplinary Team

Desirable criteria:


  • Experience in recruiting patients to clinical research trials
