  • Job description
  • If you're part of the Environment Agency (EA), you're part of the solution. Working with us means protecting and improving the environment and tackling issues of national importance. We're based across England, and our responsibilities span industry regulation, flood defences, land contamination, water quality, fisheries and conservation.
Such broad scope of work calls for diverse, multi-skilled teams. Together, we'll promote sustainable growth, tackle climate change and secure a better future for everyone.
As an Environmental Monitoring Officer, you will play a key role in delivering crucial environmental monitoring.

This involves taking part in a variety of fieldwork and collecting a wide range of samples, from river water to effluents, invertebrates, groundwater boreholes, bathing waters and fish surveys.

After collecting samples, you will input and interpret environmental data using our monitoring systems.

The role also requires a good deal of communication, as you will liaise with site contacts, members of the public and internal customers while mentoring other team members to make sure we produce consistently high standards of work.

A small van will be provided and there is the option to start your day and end your day from your home address with an expectation of a daily visit to the contracted base location for sample drop offs.

  • The team
  • We collect field based samples and environmental data for both local, national and statutory requirements. The data collected provides key information to serve diverse community and environmental needs.
The Lancashire team is dispersed. This post will be focused on Southport, Wigan, Manchester and surrounding areas. You will be expected to cross boundaries to support other teams. This is a field-based role and requires long, extensive driving in urban and rural locations.

  • Experience/skills required
  • A full UK driving licence is essential for this role.

Experience/Skills required:

  • Field sample collection experience, including ecology sampling
  • Training and mentoring staff
  • Able to work independently as part of a dispersed team
  • Good organisational skills
  • Working in water confidently and safely
  • Ability to communicate effectively with external and internal customers
  • Required to use standard IT packages to deliver work as well as more specialised systems
  • Experience of health, safety and wellbeing procedures including carrying out risk assessments
  • Confidence driving long distances, in rural and urban environments

Desirable:

  • Experience of biosecurity procedures
  • Contact and additional information
  • A full UK driving licence is essential for this role as regular travel will be required.
We are looking for enthusiastic, self-motivated applicants. Experience and knowledge of the Environment Agency's monitoring programmes would be an advantage, but it is not essential.
