    Job summary

    An exciting opportunity has arisen for the appointment of dynamic and motivated nurses to join our existing band 6 team on J81 Surgical - Oncology ICU at St James's Hospital. If you are enthusiastic to ensure high quality patient centred care is delivered, and are passionate about staff engagement, wellbeing and education then this could be the job for you.

    They should have a current NMC registration, educated to degree level or demonstrate equivalent professional experience in particular caring for and managing the critically unwell patients. A recognised teaching qualification is essential.

    Main duties of the job

    The Jobholder will carry 24 hour continuing responsibility for the effective and efficient management of the ward/department. Providing professional, clinical and managerial leadership, and supervision for the nursing team. The jobholder is responsible for developing and maintaining the unit philosophy that has the patient at the centre of compassionate safe and quality care delivery, and having a focussed approach to care for those who care for our patients.

    About us

    Surgical-Oncology ICU is a 16 bed unit where you will have the opportunity to develop level 2&3 critical care skills. We care for multi-specialty surgical patients, including Upper GI, Colo-rectal, gynaecology, HPB, urology, pancreatic and thoracic surgery. We also care for patients who have undergone renal transplant. Oncology patients requiring Level 2&3 care will also be cared for on our unit. We also admit acute patients from ED or from the wards.     Job responsibilities

    The jobholder will play an essential role assisting the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse with the 24 hour continuing responsibility for the effective and efficient management of the ward / department. They will contribute to the provision of professional, clinical, managerial leadership and supervision for the nursing team. The jobholder is responsible for helping to develop and maintain a ward or departments philosophy that has the patient at the centre of compassionate safe and quality care delivery. By assisting with managing the administrative and financial aspects of the ward, the jobholder will support the cost effective use of resources.

    As an experienced nurse the jobholder will assist in co-ordinating activities on the ward or department ensuring effective communication is maintained at all times, providing support to qualified and unqualified nurses within the ward/dept. He/she will play a key role in the assessment of patient care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care.

    The jobholder will act as a role model, promoting quality evidence-based practice, developing the nursing team and ensuring effective management of the ward/department in the absence of the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse.

    The job holder will hold the bed bleep out of hours ensuring safe staffing and patient placement at St Jamess.
