    Description

    Whitworth Curatorial Fellowship
Supported by the Frieze x Deutsche Bank Emerging Curators Fellowship

Closing date for applications: 21 May 2024

The Whitworth is looking for an emerging curator.

We are looking for someone with a genuine interest in the visual arts, a willingness to learn and get involved in a variety of tasks, and a desire to develop a career as a curator.

The Whitworth Curatorial Fellowship is supported by the Frieze x Deutsche Bank Emerging Curators Fellowship. It is a full-time fixed term (18 month), paid traineeship, open to applicants from UK nationals who identify from a Global Majority background who may have faced barriers in accessing opportunities or a platform for representation.
This exciting traineeship opportunity is designed to enable an emerging curator to gain the experience necessary to secure permanent employment within the arts sector. The aim of the fellowship is to enable an individual to forge a long-term pathway as a curator in the visual arts.

A key part of the role will be to support the cataloguing, research, display and programming around the newly acquired ABC Wax Archive. This is last surviving industrial design archive of a Manchester textile printing company. Alongside working on the ABC Wax Archive project, the Fellow will gain curatorial insights and experience by working with the Collections and Exhibitions Team across a busy programme of historic, modern and contemporary art, textiles and wallpaper collections and exhibitions. The Fellow will also gain knowledge of wider gallery activity, working with teams across the Whitworth.

Interviews are planned to take place on 11 June 2024

What you will get in return:

    • Fantastic market leading Pension scheme
    • Excellent employee health and wellbeing services including an Employee Assistance Programme
    • Exceptional starting annual leave entitlement, plus bank holidays
    • Additional paid closure over the Christmas period
    • Local and national discounts at a range of major retailers

The Whitworth's Curatorial Fellowship is open to applicants from from UK nationals who identify from a Global Majority who may have faced barriers in accessing opportunities or a platform for representation.

This programme has been designed specifically for those who may be experiencing barriers due to inequalities in UK society. We therefore encourage applications from those whose socio-economic background has potentially resulted in them having less access to opportunities in the arts. For example, this could be those who may have attended a state-funded school or college, were eligible for free school meals at secondary school or might be the first in their family to have attended higher education.

The Whitworth Fellowship is open to applicants based in Northern England (Cheshire, Cumbria, County Durham, East Yorkshire, Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Merseyside, North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire, Northumberland, North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, Tyne and Wear and West Yorkshire).
