Applications are invited from flexible, enthusiastic and highly motivated individuals for the position of a part time Biomedical Assistant in Microbiology.


We have a requirement for a person to assist in the smooth delivery and administration of the daily technical work of the across all areas of the department.

Prior microbiology laboratory or data entry/office experience would be an advantage; however, full training will be given. The post will involve some manual handling duties and require good manual dexterity.


You should have the ability to plan, multitask and organise your own work, and to adapt flexibly when circumstances change.

A dedicated team member with ability to communicate and listen effectively, you will bring a pleasant and helpful approach both face-to-face and on the telephone.


The successful applicant will be educated to minimum of GCSE level and possess good keyboard skills with previous experience involving a keen attention to detail.


This post is not appropriate for individuals with IBMS approved degrees looking to progress to a career as a Biomedical scientist as it not a training post.


A BioMedical Assistant (BMA) works as part of the technical team, supervised by experienced Biomedical Scientists and managed by the Laboratory Team Leaders and Operational Head of Department.

Once trained a BMA is required to assist the Biomedical Scientists and Associate Practitioners.

The post holder will be required to work on sites as appropriate for the delivery of the service and may be asked to work across sites within the trust.


The Clinical Microbiology laboratory at Leicester is a comprehensive 24/7 medical microbiology service handling around 1.3 million microbiology and virology tests per year.

We are active in supporting infection prevention, control & diagnostics of a wide range of infections. The laboratory is UKAS accredited. Teaching, training, audit, research and development are actively encouraged and pursued within the department. The laboratory is approved by the IBMS and fully supports continuing professional development.

About the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust: )

The laboratory provides a 24/7 diagnostic service throughout the year.


General duties will include:


  • To carry out, under supervision by qualified staff, routine tasks in the laboratory which do not require the interpretive skills or training to become a Registered Biomedical Scientis
  • To rotate between the sections of the laboratory as require
  • To assist in the provision of a microbiological service that is of high quality and cost effective for clinical, environmental, research and training purposes
  • Perform other technical duties as required within postholder's training and competence
  • To perform any other duties required by the Operational Head of Department commensurate with grade
  • Training relevant to this post, including safety aspects in the handling of microbiological material, will be given
