  • It's an exciting time to be working on water resources management. With future climate change and population growth predictions, it has never been more important to allocate this precious resource between different uses whilst protecting and enhancing the water environment.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated and forward thinking individual with excellent communication skills and knowledge of environmental issues.

This post is a technical officer role


The post holder will:
- assist water resources planning specialists with water framework directive investigations and the implementation of measures through the Water industry national environment programme (WINEP);
review and comment on local authority and water company plans;
assist the area drought coordinator in reporting and planning activities and ensure that our drought plan is up to date;
administer an online mailbox and deal with internal and external enquiries;
maintain permit information and models which underpin our policy and decision making and keep published policies up to date;
respond to water resource licence consultations and provide technical support to other teams;
communicate and enforce licence conditions to customers which protect the flow in our rivers and assist our regulatory teams with reviewing non-compliance;
work with Internal drainage boards to manage the balance of water supply and demand in our fenland catchments;
Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do.

You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents, or provide business continuity support during an incident.

This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.


  • The team
  • You'll join the Integrated Environment Planning (IEP) team, containing specialists in water resources, water quality and catchment planning, working across the East Anglia Area.
We are a team of experienced advisors central to environmental decision making.

We work with internal and external partners to collate, analyse and share data, providing the environmental evidence to inform our area's priorities, and to deliver actions that maximise benefits for people and the natural environment.


  • Experience/skills required
  • You should be qualified to degree level, preferably in an environmental discipline and have experience in the following areas:
  • awareness of water resources legislation and understanding of the current pressures to water availability in East Anglia;
- communicating effectively with a wide range of customers in different situations;
- understanding, analysing and translating a variety of data and information into evidence that can be used to inform and influence decisions by technical and non-technical audiences, and support strategic planning activities
- ability to work under own initiative, and as part of a larger, cross-functional team, prioritising and delivering work to relevant standards and tight deadlines
- good organisational skills/discipline and the ability to plan, track, deliver and evaluate own work;

  • Experience of working in water resources and licensing is desirable however, training will be provided.
