    RSK's Materials & Structures business unit, has an exciting opportunity for a Laboratory Manager to join the team in Hemel Hempstead. This is a full-time, permanent position.

    Do you want to work for a multi-disciplinary consultancy that has been providing services for over 40 years, with market leading capabilities across the construction, services and rail sectors?

    You will be managing a UKAS-accredited laboratory, enabling us to provide high quality services for evaluating construction materials to assist our internal and external clients with detailed assessment reports and expert guidance.

    Responsibilities:

    • Manage and optimise laboratory workflows, ensuring efficient utilisation of resources, equipment, and space. Coordinate and schedule laboratory activities to meet project deadlines and maintain a high level of productivity.
    • Ensure compliance with recognised testing standards by reviewing and drafting accurate Certificates of Test for completed laboratory analyses. Collaborate with technicians and testing personnel to verify data accuracy and produce comprehensive reports that meet industry standards and client requirements.
    • Supervise and coordinate a team of lab technicians and scientists. Provide guidance, mentorship, and support to foster a positive and collaborative work environment. Conduct regular performance reviews and assist in professional development plans for staff.
    • Implement and enforce safety protocols and risk assessments to ensure a secure working environment for all lab personnel. Stay up-to-date with safety regulations and lead safety training initiatives.
    • Work alongside the Quality Manager to oversee the quality control and quality assurance processes to maintain accurate and reliable results.
    • Monitor equipment performance and calibration, ensuring that all instruments are well-maintained and functioning properly.
    • Manage laboratory inventory procure necessary materials while optimising costs and maintaining adequate stock levels.
    • Conduct internal audits and host external inspections in partnership with Quality Manager.
    • Collaborate with equipment supervisor and technical staff to ensure the proper maintenance, calibration, and repair of laboratory equipment. Schedule routine maintenance and troubleshoot equipment issues promptly.
    • Oversee data management practices, ensuring accurate record-keeping, data entry, and proper documentation. Implement data security measures to safeguard sensitive information.
    • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement activities such as process optimisation, technology upgrades, and workflow enhancements. Stay abreast of industry developments and implement best practices to enhance laboratory operations.
    • Demonstrate excellent self-management, organisational and communication (written and oral) with clients and colleagues.
    • Maintain a record of professional development/training to facilitate progress to appropriate recognition/qualifications.
    • Prepare tenders and other Project Management activities as required.

    Qualifications/Experience:

    • Bachelor's or master's degree in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline preferred.
    • Proven experience in laboratory or testing facility management, including staff supervision and resource allocation.
    • Strong knowledge of safety protocols, regulatory compliance, and quality control procedures.
    • Familiarity with a wide range of laboratory / testing equipment and instruments.
    • Excellent organisational and time-management skills with the ability to multitask and prioritise effectively.
    • Exceptional problem-solving and decision-making abilities, even in high-pressure situations.
    • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills to foster a collaborative work environment.
    • Proficient in data management and computer applications relevant to laboratory operations.
    • Good verbal and written communication skills.
    • Good interpersonal skills.
    • Strong attention to detail.
    • Full driving licence preferred.
    • Experience in lean sigma principles would be advantageous.
    • Understanding of defect investigation practices and appropriate testing methods beneficial.
