An exciting opportunity has arisen for a 0.4 FTE Band 5 Assistant Psychologist in the Neuropsychology Service at NUH due to the existing postholder progressing to clinical training.


We are looking for a highly driven, organised and compassionate individual with experience in clinical research and an interest in improving treatments for children with cancer.

The post holder will be responsible for the coordination of neuropsychology data collection at the lead UK centre of a high profile European paediatric brain tumour trial funded by Cancer Research UK.

This will include cognitive assessment of children locally, liaising with clinical psychologists across Europe, data collation and analysis. The role will be supervised by a qualified clinical neuropsychologist.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will be welcomed to the Department of Clinical Psychology & Neuropsychology within the trust.

Currently there are over 30 clinical psychologists, and assistant and trainee clinical psychologists working across a number of medical inpatient and outpatient services within the Trust including:

Adult and Paediatric Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Neurorehabilitation Services, Stroke, NPH, Paediatrics, Burns, Cystic Fibrosis, Oncology, Cleft Lip and Palate, Major Trauma, Intensive Care, Renal and Haematology.

We have excellent links with the University of Nottingham and regional Clinical Psychology Doctorate Courses.

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Experience of working as an Assistant Psychologist (or similar) in direct clinical contact with people with psychological difficulties
  • Experience of working with children with neurological illness and injury
  • Experience of quantitative data analysis
  • Experience of neuropsychology assessments
Desirable criteria

  • Experience of working with patients with physical health problems and/or in an acute NHS trust
  • Experience of data collection and statistical analysis on a funded research trial
  • Experience of working with children
  • Familiarity with biopsychosocial models of disability and care
Qualification

Essential criteria

  • Degree in Psychology (upper second class or above).
  • Eligible for Graduate Membership of the British Psychological Society.
Desirable criteria

  • Training in topics related to mental health, psychological difficulties or psychological therapies.
Communication and Relationship skills

Essential criteria

  • Ability to build positive relationships with colleagues and patients.
  • Ability to work as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to use supervision appropriately.
Desirable criteria

  • Understand the importance and function of supervision.
  • Ability to describe psychological concepts in a manner that is accessible to patients and staff with no or little psychological understanding.
Analytical and Judgement skills

Essential criteria

  • Ability to correctly administer, score and interpret psychometric tests
  • Ability to work with autonomy but within level of competence.
Desirable criteria

  • Experience of Excel database management
  • Experience of SPSS
Planning and organisation skills

Essential criteria

  • Ability to be highly organised and prioritise workload.
  • Have flexibility in approach to work.
  • Have a proactive approach to managing difficulties that may arise in the role.
Physical skills

Essential criteria

  • Ability to lift and carry heavy test materials (over 10kg).
  • Ability to concentrate for prolonged periods and be capable of sitting in a constrained position.
  • Ability to attend work punctually and reliably.
