    Design Manager

    We're looking for a Design Manager to join our Kier Transportation Rail team and assist on a number or rail related projects across the Northwest.

    Location: Greater Manchester and surrounding areas- remote working available, with occasional travel to the office required

    What will your responsibilities be?

    As a Design Manager, you'll be working within the Kier Rail team, supporting on a wide range of projects across the Northwest from £10M - £200M in value within the rail industry. The Design Manager will take a key role in ensuring design programmes and quality standards are met through the effective management of external and internal designers, stakeholders, and client teams.

    Your day to day will include:

    • Responsible for managing design consultant appointments and input into supply chain contracts. Ensure that appointed design consultants carry out their duties in line with their appointment, interrogating returns to ensure compliance with standards and brief.
    • Production of design programmes, design scopes, design responsibility matrices, appointments, schedules.
    • Manage design development and optioneering providing a strong focus on buildability between construction and design teams to ensure most efficient and effective solutions are selected. Engage with specialist suppliers both at tender and contract stage.
    • Contribute to and record design decisions including decisions made to embed Safe by Design, Buildability, Value Engineering, Whole life Cost, Sustainability. Ensure best practice and lessons learned are recorded.
    • Provide input to and managing output from the change control process relating to the design and design supply chain. Including leading value engineering on projects.

    What are we looking for?

    • Implement sustainable best practice in Design.
    • Assist Commercial teams in appointing professional engineering and design services. Provide ongoing technical management of the appointed design teams; proactively monitor and control design budgets.
    • Input to project programme by regularly assessing design delivery progress, identifying exceptions, and aligning the forecast design delivery strategy to project milestones.
    • Support the project commercial team in securing maximum sustainable value from contracts through value engineering and innovation and in settling subcontract accounts fairly.
