There has never been a better time to lead, guide and support our maternity services at East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust.

We operate across two acute sites at Colchester and Ipswich, a standalone Birthing Unit at Clacton, which has recently had excellent feedback from a CQC inspection, and also operate 8 community midwifery teams across East Suffolk and North Essex, including a Maternity Continuity of Carer team.


As a Head of Midwifery, you will be reporting to the Director of Midwifery and working in partnership with the Divisional Management Team, Clinical Director and Clinical Leads on both sites.


You will be a key member of our speciality management team providing operational and clinical leadership to ensure the women, pregnant people and staff are safe, cared for and listened to.

The Head of Midwifery is also responsible and accountable to the Director of Midwifery:

  • For the continuous improvement of clinical services, safety and experience for all women, pregnant people and their families, using maternity services.
  • Along with the Associate Director of Nursing responsible to neonates, be accountable for the delivery and monitoring of NHS England's Three Year Plan for Maternity and Neonatal Services.
  • For ensuring robust governance process are in place and monitored, to deliver the highest standards of safety within maternity services. To include the delivery of the Maternity Incentive Schemes', ten safety actions.
  • For ensuring the implementation of national and Trust initiatives in a timely and responsive manner.
  • Accountable for the delivery and monitoring of robust infection control measures through relentless vigilance and by ensuring delivery of all aspects of the Infection Control Strategy.
  • Determine the strategic implementation of safeguarding children and other regulatory and statutory compliance areas.
  • Lead on the development and implementation of workforce planning to ensure provision of the right staff.
