Reporting directly to the UK Service Leader, Protection System Field Service engineer will be a key member of the operations team, providing Engineering validation support, conducts Field Service activities at customer sites and lead maintenance service activities covering GE protection systems Installed base at onshore and offshore substations.


Essential Responsibilities:

The On Site Services Specialist will be responsible for:

  • Perform protection system validation and factory acceptance test (FAT).
  • Perform commissioning of substation protection system (protection IED's, auxiliary relays, communication test, coordination with control engineer for signal testing) at customer sites onshore and offshore.
  • Lead maintenance services with customers including first line fault diagnostics of protection systems installed at customer substations onshore and offshore.
  • When on call the engineer has to be available over out of office hours, weekends, and bank holidays to support the customers on first line telephonic support and if required to visit customer substations onshore and offshore to clear the fault.
  • Provide technical instruction and assistance to customer representatives regarding installation, operation, repair, and maintenance at customer's sites. Ensure full reports are generated to the endCustomer.
  • Support protection system engineering tasks including but not limited to setting calculations, protection relay configuration, communication protocol related configuration modifications, configure and test the protection system configuration on mirror platforms.
  • Manage Fault reports & customer complaints in line with defined procedures.
  • Coordinate with CoE (Centre of Excellence) and others for Products & systems obsolescence management.
  • Assist with the internal and external training activities including classroom as well as commissioningbased training.
  • To gain knowledge of new products and systems. Develop and further expand technical knowledge and expertise, currently recognized industry standards for engineering ability.
  • Provide weekly time sheets and monthly reports including status of all work undertaken by the engineer during that month and any other items relating to the Services Department.
  • Maintain knowledge of the reporting system to the extent required for timely and accurate input of field information necessary.
  • Communicate project commissioning schedule details, milestones, site requirements, quality issues, and tools/equipment requirements to the appropriate project and service manager.
  • Support the engineering, Sales, and Commercial/tendering teams on service return of experience.
  • Obtain & Maintain GE / Customer Competent Person Authorization. To ensure that allrelevant safety documentation and site competency certificates are up to date and inform the services Leader of impending renewals.
  • Ensuring that the Company's quality, environment health & safety policies are read, understood, and adhered to.
  • Maintain an excellent safety mindset to assure the executed work reflects the technical requirements within GE safety standards.
  • Provide, audit, and implement quality control requirements for onsite activities. Assist the company on the Quality Focus, always strive for continuous improvement, ensure all areas of customer dissatisfaction/satisfaction are addressed and take corrective action when the source of any deviation from required standards is identified.

Job Requirements:


  • Ability to travel to customer sites locally and globally. (Around 160 days/year)
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Proficiency level in English. Other languages valued (Spanish, French, Italian and/or Portuguese)
  • Experience in Substation Protection Systems, working on technical support, testing, maintenance, commissioning in transmission, distribution, industrial and power plants environments.
  • Experience with Control systems (LV, MV & HV).
  • Strong experience in substation protection systems, MiCOM, Universal Relay (UR), Multilin, GE legacy products (K series) knowledge preferred.
  • Knowledge of communication Protocols aspects, IEC61850, DNP3, MODBUS.
  • Experience in working with test equipment such as Omicron CMC series and related accessories.

Desired Characteristics

  • Minimum of a BSc in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent) coupled with four to five years project/service related experience.
  • Protection systems Commissioning Engineer with demonstrated experience in substations ranging from 11kV to 400kV.
  • Knowledge of Automation, Electrical Control Systems and SCADA/DCS systems.
  • Excellent knowledge of GE Protection relays.
  • Knowledge on Networking, Process bus testing environment and communication Protocols will be highly valued.
  • Experience with electrical protection systems detailed design is essential for the job.
