    GENERAL SUMMARY

    To lead all Engineering activities within the Research & Development (R&D) Laboratory at our Glasgow, UK site. Working with Engineering Team colleagues, responsible for all design aspects of all types of pumping equipment, with a specific focus on Pump R&D, Test Loop Design, Product Testing / Analysis and Laboratory Modernisation & Digitisation.

    As part of the New Product Development process, responsible for test rig concept design, costing, sourcing, technical support, assembly support and performance testing for R&D projects. Ensuring that project profitability is maintained whilst meeting customer specifications and the company's overall strategy.

    The Research & Development (R&D) Laboratory Engineer possesses skills in Mechanical Engineering Design, ideally with a basic level of allied Electrical Systems Engineering, (e.g. Mechatronics background) and has ability and drive to apply these skills without supervision, taking the technical lead on Engineering R&D project activities. They apply their technical knowledge to allow the company to provide products and services that meet customer requirements, providing technical resolution of problems from pre-win bid support all the way through to project conclusion. They are party to development activities to ensure that the company has access to the latest technology and ensures it remains competitive and at the forefront of product innovation.

    PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS)

  • Ensure safe working for all R&D projects.
  • Lead R&D projects within New Product Development (NPD), Original Equipment (OE) and Aftermarket (AM) business streams.
  • Provision of estimates at tender stage for both equipment and labour to ensure accurate project costs are included in any R&D project bids.
  • Concept development and specification as required to ensure that laboratory equipment is suitable for the testing of various features and products.
  • Provide necessary technical support to Procurement department to ensure that bought in R&D equipment meets the design requirements and that the equipment is purchased within the defined budgets.
  • Provide necessary technical support to Operational staff within Glasgow site.
  • Control the certification, drawings and technical reports (including vendor drawings and data) issued to the customer as part of the R&D projects.
  • Generate Pump Test Loop 3D General Arrangement Drawings, Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), Control Philosophies and Design files as required.
  • Creation and execution of Laboratory Modernisation & Digitisation strategy.
  • Laboratory inventory and equipment management.
  • Attendance at bid clarification and client meetings where required.
  • Familiar with the environmental aspects and impacts of the activities and processes involved in the role and the procedures, practices, and measures to manage the impact.
  • Familiar with the risks and hazards within the activities and processes of the role and procedures, practices, and measures in place to mitigate the risks.
  • Helping team to achieve project deadlines, delivered with desired quality, cost and efficiency.
  • Works to develop functional skills and advance disciplines of self.
  • Maintenance of company standards relating to discipline.
  • All other duties as relevant to the post
  • SKILLS

  • IT skills required for discipline specific software as a user. Microsoft Office Suite, Solid Works, LabView would be beneficial.
  • Team working ability and an attitude of collaboration, mentoring and flexibility.
  • Desire and ability to develop skills beyond current level of expertise.
  • Willingness and confidence to communicate (written and presentation) with a professional and knowledgeable approach and manner to all levels.

  • EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent with related experience/training, or equivalent combination of education and additional practical and professional experience.
  • Ability to demonstrate a high level of experience in undertaking Mechanical Engineering/Package Design tasks without supervision.
  • Basic Electrical systems knowledge would be beneficial.
  • Minimum of 10 years R&D / Laboratory experience.
  • Good interpersonal, communication and influencing skills.
  • Ability to guide and train colleagues.
  • Ability to set and hit personal, team and project deadlines.
  • An interest in self-development, Pump & related Package Technology and Engineering.
  • An active and valuable team participant who puts the Team success before individual success.
  • You must have valid right to work in the UK and be able to obtain Security Clearance to apply for this role.
