    Applications are invited for the post of Research/Clinical Fellow in the Department of Urology. The post is initially for one year.

    Darent Valley Hospital has a comprehensive Stone Centre with, a static lithotripter, holmium laser, PCNL, and metabolic clinic within the dedicated Poplar Urology unit. It also has advanced superficial bladder cancer set up and provides comprehensive urological care.

    The department is active in clinical research and trainees and fellows have published widely and have presented at national and international meetings. Many have secured national training numbers.

    The post is ideal for somebody who is waiting to get a national training number and is looking for research experience and publications. The job also provides operative training. The successful candidates will participate on the on call rota, currently 1 in 8. There is also scope for doing a one year MCh (Urology) with HEKSS funding, at The Institute of Medical sciences , Canterbury Christ Church University.

    Main duties of the job

    The successful candidate will form part of a team of consisting of the 7 Consultants backed up by Speciality Doctors, Trust Grade Doctor and 2 Specialist Registrars, appointed on the S.E Thames Regional Rotation. There is 2 FY1s and 1CT appointed from the Regional Rotation . The CT rotates with General Surgery on a 3 monthly basis. Active participation in a middle grade 1:8 'On Call' rota is required.

    This post is important to the Trust to ensure the continuation of our excellent urology service and to meet the increasing workload, enhance new developments, support the cancer services agenda and to achieve the 18-weeks target. There will also be a requirement to look after the Nephrology patients within the combined specialities. There will be ample opportunities for you to develop your clinical experience in Urology.

    Detailed job description and main responsibilities

    The post holder will be committed to support the Urological Consultants to meet the increasing workload, enhance new developments, undertake research & audits and support current urology service agenda. The post holder will take part in routine urology clinics, daily ward rounds, audit, MDM, theatre sessions, lithrotripsy, and TRUS biopsy (will be trained to do) and have responsibility for the smooth running of the endoscopy lists.

  • Registerable medical qualification, MRCS
