- To provide quality legal advice and support that is proportionate, timely, cost effective and practical and which advances the overriding aim of supporting Merlin's business objectives;
- To protect the company from unacceptable financial and reputational harm and to optimise successful project delivery through effective management of legal risk;
- To enable the business to make appropriate risk-based decisions;
- To advise upon and lead the legal considerations on UK construction related projects undertaken by the company and develop stakeholder relationships within Merlin;
- To raise awareness of and champion the importance of good legal practice with key stakeholders and increase compliance with the company's legal policies;
- To provide strategic and practical legal advice for construction contract negotiations, construction and procurement planning and developing the construction contract templates used by the company; and
- Work with the project team to deliver UK construction projects and assist with commercial and practical advice at the outset of projects to mitigate risk throughout their duration.Main Responsibilities:
- Legal advice and support to the company on strategic UK development projects including new business opportunities, new brands, hotel and accommodation projects, Midway attractions, , IP collaborations and other capex investment activity;
- Live project and operational support to MMM from project inception through to completion with reference to external legal counsel by exception only;
- Where necessary, providing legal advice and support to the operating and corporate divisions of the company in relation to UK construction legal affairs with a focus on strategic commercial projects which involve significant spend/savings, high-revenue generating activity or other high profile contracts;
- Owning the process for sub £1m UK contract reviews and appropriate communication of the Contract Policy and associated documents to the company;
- Development and maintenance of UK construction contract templates;
- Assist with knowledge sharing and continuous improvement across the company estate;
- Facilitation and delivery of legal training to appropriate stakeholders on relevant legal issues affecting the business;
- Providing legal support as required on key legal and compliance projects (other than construction related projects) including delivery of any necessary processes and training;
- Working with the Senior Construction Counsel to manage and resolve disputes that arise from construction projects; and Identifying and participating in strategic legal projects and initiatives to improve efficiency and drive excellence across the legal function in addition to supporting Senior Construction Counsel in promoting the legal function.
