Research Assistant/Associate in Mechanics of Chemofracture - Cambridge, United Kingdom - University of Cambridge

    Default job background
    Fixed Term
    Description

A position exists, for a Research Assistant/Associate in the Department of Engineering, to work on Batteries. The post holder will be located in Central Cambridge Cambridgeshire, UK.

Energy materials such as lithium ion batteries and fuel cells are prone to degradation by a range of failure mechanisms including swell-induced fatigue and micro-cracking. The apparent toughness may be a function of chemical composition, and the driving force for failure may have an electrical component in addition to mechanical component. Topology has a major effect both on performance and on the failure mechanisms.

There is a research opening for a Research Associate at the post-doctoral level (or a researcher who is soon to receive their PhD), with a working experience of solid mechanics and possibly with previous research on electrochemical technology. The job is to develop a coupled mechanical and electrochemical model for device performance and degradation.

The key responsibilities and duties are to conduct numerical research into the mechanics of batteries. The role holder is also expected take part in collaborative work, and contribute to seminars, and to take part in the research group's activities publish in the open literature and liaise with the sponsors.

The successful candidate must have obtained or be close to obtaining a PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a related subject, have some research experience and a publication record.

Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.

    Salary Ranges: Research Assistant: £29,605 - £33,966Research Associate: £36,024 - £44,263

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 12 months in the first instance.
