Job summary:


Are you looking for a change that is stimulating and rewarding The Nuclear Department within, Navy Command, has an important role in providing education and training ranging from introductory to postgraduate level to Service and MOD Civilian personnel, in support of the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Programme as well as bespoke courses for the wider nuclear industry.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.


Job description:


  • You will play a key role in educating and training personnel involved in the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program in Reactor Physics

Person specification:

Deliver lectures, tutorials and research project design up to RFQ Level 7 (Masters Level).

Design, develop and assess courses in:
Core design choices in the Nuclear Reactor Plant (NRP), including their reactor physics motivations and consequences

The physical implications of reactor operation, its relationship to radiological and other hazards, and how the physical origin of the hazard affects the safety measures required

The key reactor physics constraints on the NRP and how reactor safety systems protect against the associated limits being exceeded, and the physical consequences of their being breached

The appropriate models and experiments to study reactor physics issues. Appreciation of the significance of the results and how they are applied in core design and operation

The dynamic behaviour of the NRP, including the interaction of reactor physics and thermal hydraulics and how this relates to reactor stability

The through-life reactor physics behaviour of the NRP, including analysis of the measures used to achieve the desired lifetime and performance

Critically evaluate and compare the appropriateness of reactor physics models and procedures


You will also:

  • Design, supervise and assess student projects
  • Undertake Course Manager duties
  • Maintain, develop and manage codes and software
  • Operate and manage specialist equipment
  • Attend working groups and represent the department at conferences and working groups
  • Ensure continued professional development in area of specialist knowledge

The faculty strongly supports continuing professional development and therefore upon taking up the position, you will have the opportunity to undertake a range of courses, attend conferences and build collaborations with industry and academia.

If you have not already acquired professional registration, then you will also be supported in working towards Chartered status with a relevant scientific or engineering professional body.

It is anticipated that any research undertaken which is not security classified may be suitable for publication in peer-reviewed journals or at conferences.

The department is in HMS Sultan, Gosport, Hampshire which is the primary engineering training establishment for the Royal Navy. HMS Sultan's on-site facilities include secure parking, gymnasium, Wardroom membership and an onsite shop.

Stokes Bay beach is close by and Gosport is a short ferry ride to Portsmouth, which offers excellent facilities such as access to travel networks, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard and Gunwharf Quays outlet shopping.


This post on the MOD Civilian Nuclear Post Control List (PCL) and may attract the Nuclear Recruitment and Retention Allowance (RRA).

This is a discretionary allowance.

The post being listed on the PCL does not mean that the post holder will have an automatic entitlement to receive the RRA.

The NSQEP RRA is not a contractual allowance and can be amended or withdrawn without notice in line with MOD Main and Submarine Delivery Agency policy.
