Description

We are looking for an experienced Head of Drama to cover the running of our Drama department and be part of our Heads of Department team during a maternity leave.

The Head of Drama will be responsible for all curriculum teaching including GCSE, and A level when running, and lead the School's significant contribution to the extra-curricular life of the school, including House Drama Competitions and the annual school production in the Spring Term.

In addition to an excellent degree/relevant qualifications and strong record as a classroom practitioner, the applicant will be able to demonstrate the ability to think strategically, organise other people, communicate needs and plans to the Senior Leadership Team and motivate others.

Strong administrative skills will be essential.

High standards are expected of staff as well as pupils and we all strive to 'be the best that we can be'.

The Drama department also supports other curriculum areas wherever possible such as the annual Sixth Form Revue, a fond and firm tradition of the school, and boarding events ranging from Karaoke nights to Boarding's Got Talent.

The Drama department is led by the Head of Department who is responsible for all curriculum teaching including GCSE and A Level.

The majority of Drama teaching takes place in the Swinton Theatre, a fully equipped theatre space with a proscenium arch stage and 36 channel lighting rig.

The space is very flexible and school productions have been staged in Traverse and In-the-round as well as on the proscenium.

The Assembly Hall is also used for large scale productions and is equipped with a full lighting rig and flown audio system with 240 capacity retractable tiered seating.

This space has LED lighting and can also facilitate multi-media performance with a large-scale image projector and electronic projector screen.

The Drama department makes a significant contribution to the extra-curricular life of the school and drama is very popular at HLC.

The yearly highlights include House Drama Competitions in the Autumn and term, and the annual school production in the Spring Term, as well as The Christmas Concert and providing performances for whole school assemblies and other events.

The aim is always to offer performance opportunities to as many pupils as possible and performers are drawn from every year group within school.

School productions are led by the Head of Drama and often produced in collaboration with the Music Department.

This year, the school is staging Bugsy Malone and recent productions have included Annie, an adaptation of Fantastic Mr Fox, Antigone, The Wizard of Oz, and The Crucible.

Each year Drama and Dance Scholarships are awarded at KS3, KS4 and KS5 and there are currently 10 Drama Scholars and 2 Dance Scholars throughout the school.

Scholars play an important part in promoting the Performing Arts department and serving as role models for other pupils in both curriculum and extra-curricular drama.

Speech and Drama lessons leading to LAMDA qualifications are taught by two members of part time staff and is an area where pupils consistently enjoy significant success.

The Head of Drama works in close collaboration with the Speech and Drama teachers for the benefit of pupils' progress and development.
