    Job summary

    Ward 17 at the Alexandra Hospital is a 28 bedded unit which is responsible for the care of all Urology emergency admissions for the Trust. The ward also accepts admissions of elective Urology patients. The Urology Directorate within the Worcestershire Acute Trust is a growing service which prides itself in caring passionately for its patients. To this end we work together both within the ward and with the medical team, the Urology CNS's, with our diagnostic unit and other allied health professionals to ensure the best outcomes possible for our patients.

    We are looking to recruit a compassionate, highly motivated, committed and passionate nursing leader into the role of ward manager. the post holder would have a passion for Urology nursing and have experience of working within a surgical environment as well as some knowledge of the management of a team. You would be responsible for managing, directing and leading the nursing team and would need to provide leadership and mentoring and act as a positive role model for junior staff in a manner that positively reflects our Trust values and behaviours. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate and develop further their skills in leadership, and service development.

    Main duties of the job

    Acceptpersonal responsibility and accountability for your infection prevention andcontrol practice. Ensure that you arefamiliar with, and comply with, all relevant policies. Ensure that you receive mandatory updates ininfection control.

    Key Working Relationships:

    General management, Senior and junior medical and nursingstaff, ward clerks, facilities staff, other health care professionals, socialworkers, other care providers, patients and their relatives, volunteers.

    RiskAssessment:

    This postinvolves manual handling activities and exposure to body fluids and chemicals.May involve some VDU work and individuals may be exposed to violence andaggression.

    Job Purpose:

    To ensure a high standard of nursingcare at all times through the effective management of staff and resources onhis/her allocated department.

    To demonstrate strong clinical leadershipin stressful and challenging situations.

    To promote a positive approach tonew challenges and creative ways of working.

    To act as advocate for theirdesignated area and liase with all members of the multi-disciplinary team toco-ordinate all aspects of patient care in the best interests of the patientand family.

    To facilitate research basedpractice within their Ward and ensure appropriate implementation.

    To ensure that nursing proceduresare implemented and maintained in accordance with the Policies of theWorcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.

    To ensure good standards of practicein the Ward through effective quality assurance measures such as clinical auditprogrammes.

    To ensure all staff is conversantand comply with Trust Policies and regulations, and attend compulsory lecturesas instructed.

    To monitor the safe and effectiveuse of all equipment and the economic use of supplies, ordering replacementequipment together with maintenance of that equipment.

    Management:

    To ensure that a duty rota for thestaff within the Ward will provide effective and well-balanced cover to meetwith the requirements of a 24 hour service and ensures the presence of asuitably qualified and experienced nurse at all times. Taking into account the budgetaryconstraints.

    To liaise with other Ward/DepartmentManagers within the Directorate and other Directorates as necessary, to placeworkload and skill mix as effectively as possible. To inform and discuss with Matron/DirectorateManager any problems regarding nurse management.

    Allocate, co-ordinate, monitor andassess the work of teams and individuals.

    To manage the Ward/Unit allocated budgeteffectively to remain within financial constraints.

    To ensure effective two-waycommunication with all disciplines so that patients receive optimum care.

    Plan, obtain and deploy physicaland/or financial resources.

    To provide information for and participatein studies to determine workloads, patient dependency and quality assurance.

    To maintain accurate recordsrelating to all aspects of Ward management.

    To participate in a rota of cover inthe absence of Matron/Directorate Manager.

    Contribute to the development ofservices.

    Staff Development:

    To ensure all staff reach their fullpotential by enabling them to develop professional, clinical, managerial andcommunication skills, which will be identified through the use of IPR.

    To plan and participate in theteaching programmes of learners in accordance with their objectives, workingclosely with the University.

    To develop the role of nursingwithin their specialty Ward and undertake training and assessment to extendclinical skills as appropriate to the Ward.

    To identify areas for development ofskills in accordance with the NMC guidelines.
