    Description

    Background: The School of Medicine is the largest school in the University, covering a diverse range of medical, surgical, and other healthcare disciplines. Our world-leading research ranges from basic and translational science through to clinical trials, health economics, epidemiology, and health services research. We have a vibrant postgraduate community following a range of research programmes across the medical sciences, applied psychology, and other healthcare professions. Our mission is to improve human health and quality of life locally, nationally and internationally through outstanding education, research and patient care.

    Project description: We invite applications for 3-year PhD positions, funded by the Joan Browne Legacy. Successful candidates will choose one of the following projects:

    1) Understanding and improving participant diversity in multiple sclerosis rehabilitation research )

    2) Understanding self-harm and suicide in autistic girls to improve identification and assessment )

    3) Precision oncology targeting of drug-resistant ovarian cancer )

    4) Using multi-omics to identify severe asthma patients that respond to mepolizumab )

    5) Exploring the utility of OMICS to predict physiological responses to exercise-for-health interventions )

    6) Identifying biomarkers of pain mechanisms and muscle pathophysiology in individuals with osteoarthritis )

    7) Implementing health informatics to improve quality of care and reduce inequality in the diagnosis and treatment of lymphoma )

    8) Understanding the patient experience of isotretinoin for severe acne: informing better resources for patients and planning future clinical trials )

    9) Social justice in the medical workforce: An exploratory study of the experiences of UK doctors from working-class backgrounds in pursuing a career in medicine )

    10) Geriatric oncology in medical education: optimising undergraduate curriculum design and implementation )

    11) Evaluating the Value and Impact of Conducting Process Evaluation Alongside Randomised Controlled Trials )

    Further information and Application: Applicants should have a minimum of a 2.1 undergraduate degree in a relevant subject and be classified as Home students (see below). The successful applicants will receive the usual UKRI stipend (currently £19,237) and paid fees for Home students.

    Eligibility for Funding: Funding available only for home students. A Home student has unrestricted rights to enter and remain in the UK and has been resident in the UK for three years prior to the start of a course, but the purpose of residence cannot purely have been full-time education.
