    Wehave an exciting opportunity for a nursing leader to be the Deputy Head ofNursing for Specialty and Integrated Medicine (SIM) at the Leeds TeachingHospitals NHS Trust.

    Thisis a key role supporting SIMs Head of Nursing and wider leadershiptriumvirate, being collectively accountable for the strategic and operationaldelivery of one of the biggest and most complex CSUs in the Trust.

    Werelooking for an individual who can help to shape the services of the future,driving standards and quality of care for our patients, with passion and pacethrough collaborative working.

    The SIM CSU is a busy and fast pacedenvironment, so the post holder must be adaptive to change and able to makerapid balanced decisions to enable best care for patients and support forstaff.

    Youshould be a registered nurse with experience (in a relevant specialty) ofsuccessful operational management at middle or senior level.

    You will alsohave experience of budgetary management, operational and business planningand improvement methodology, with a track record of leading change and deliveringimprovements.

    SIMcovers 7 medical specialties (Older Adults, General Medicine, Diabetes,Endocrinology, HIV, Infectious Diseases and Genitourinary Medicine) as wellas a variety of sub-specialisms over a number of sites.

    We have 14 inpatientwards, 3 outpatient units and a funded establishment of 600 Nurses andClinical Support Workers. Annually we deliver over 100,000 occupied bed daysacross 20,000 inpatient episodes of care and 30,000 outpatient appointments.

    Manageriallyand professionally accountable to the Head of Nursing the Deputy Head ofNursing has responsibility for the leadership and management of nursing andmidwifery across the Clinical Service Unit (CSU).

    This includes linemanagement responsibilities within the CSU and the management of specificclinical services/areas.

    Theywill work to support the Head of Nursing for all issues relating to nursingwithin the CSU and will be an integral part of the senior nurse structurewithin the CSU.

    The Deputy Head of Nursing will establish and foster aneffective working relationship with the CSU Management team to leadimprovements in nursing, service delivery and the achievement oforganisational priorities within the CSU.

    The Deputy Head of Nursing willdeputise for the Head of Nursing on an as required basis.

    TheDeputy Head of Nursing has responsibility for the delivery of safe,clinically and cost effective and compassionate nursing/midwifery care withinthe CSU and provides assurance evidence to the Head of Nursing, Deputy ChiefNurse (Operations)/Deputy Chief Nurse and Chief Nurse/Chief Operating Officerregarding compliance against all appropriate professional, organisational andnational compliance standards.

    TheDeputy Head of Nursing (Band 8b) will be responsible for the care andprofessional practice delivered within a large CSU.

    Therole of the Deputy Head of Nursing will include the requirement to engagewith partners outside of the organisation e.g. to collaborate in city-wideand national improvement projects and developing relationships with serviceusers.

    Servicesprovided within the CSU have a significant regional role in providinghealthcare and this is represented in the requirement for a Deputy Head ofNursing post-holder to allow the Head of Nursing to liaise regionally andalign service provision at a strategic level.

    Leadershipand management

    The Deputy Head of Nursing hasresponsibility for the leadership and line management of nursing across theCSU and supports the Head of Nursing who is the named and identified lead forall issues of nursing practice within the CSU.

    Identified as a senior nurse withinthe CSU responsible for decision making where practice or service deliveryissues cross specialities or require cross speciality leadership.

    Has responsibility for the deliveryof safe and clinically effective care within the CSU - providing assuranceevidence in this regard to the Head of Nursing, Deputy Chief Nurse and ChiefOperating Officer (COO)
    Has line management responsibilityfor Senior Nurses and directly reporting ward managers within the CSU.

    Utilises leadership and managementskills to ensure the effective planning and delivery of nursing care andservices across the CSU planning for seasonal variations in case mix andworkload and collaborating with other Heads of Nursing where cross CSUworking is required.

    Provides credible, visible andeffective leadership, to the nursing team within the CSU.
    Through performance management andmonitoring, ensures essential quality standards are achieved and improved.
    Leads and participates in performance review programmes throughout theclinical areas.

    Develops mechanisms to enableMatrons to develop and strengthen their leadership and management skills inorder to meet the responsibilities of their roles.

    Actively works to support andempower Senior Sisters/Charge Nurses to develop and utilise their clinicalleadership skills.

    Takes the lead on defined and timelimited projects or work programmes across the CSU identified by the Head ofNursing and Deputy Chief Nurse (Operations) to support the delivery of Trustpriorities, national and local professional priorities and objectives.

    Takes the lead on defined areas ofprofessional practice on behalf of the Head of Nursing.

    Participates in Trust initiativesto develop and improve clinical practice and patient care, providing expertadvice and current service provision future developments.

    Actively promote and use the Leeds Improvementmethod to improve the quality and safety of the service

    Establishes and fosters aneffective working relationship with the team to lead improvement in nursingand midwifery care and service delivery and the achievement of organisationalpriorities within the CSU.

    Utilises negotiating andinfluencing skills to secure and support change and improvement in care andservice delivery within the CSU.

    Ensuring robust systems are inplace within the CSU to deliver effective communication from wards anddepartments to the CSU management team (ward to board and board to wardcommunication).

    Taking the lead role within the CSUfor communicating with individual nursing teams regarding the context ofprofessional care and service delivery, organisational priorities and wholehospital transformation, particularly where information is complex, sensitiveor contentious.

    Careand service - delivery and quality.

    Maintains own clinical practicestandards by participating with the delivery of patient care regularly (asagreed with the Head of Nursing and Deputy Chief Nurse (Operations).

    Fulfils the requirements asdirected by the Nursing and Midwifery Council to maintain and revalidateregistration
    Has overall responsibility for thedelivery of safe, clinically and cost effective and compassionatenursing/midwifery care within the CSU.

    Utilises planning and organisationalskills to ensure services are organised and delivered to achieve on:

    Compassionate,private and dignified care (including single sex accommodation).
    Learningand improving from incidents and complaints

    Ensures systems and processes arein place to monitor and assure the quality of nursing care and patientexperience within the CSU.

    Provides highly specialised adviceto the CSU triumvirate regarding nursing care and service delivery within theCSU.
    Proactively promotes and uses theLeeds Improvement Method to improve the quality and safety of our servicewithin the CSU

    Leads and champions the improvementand development of nursing practice within the CSU in line with regulatoryrequirements, Trust objectives, national guidance and whole systemtransformation.

    Lead responsibility for ensuringthe provision of safe, clinically and cost effective nursing/allied healthprofessional staffing within the CSU.

    Analyses and interprets data from avariety of sources to provide a nursing opinion - making decisions regardingcare and service delivery and staffing e.g.

    roster central to make decisionson staffing.
    Leads service improvement projectswithin the CSU, analysing and interpreting highly complex data and makingrecommendations to the CSU triumvirate
    Responsible for the implementationof a range of policy and service improvements within area of responsibility.
    Identifies areas for serviceimprovement, guideline and policy development.

    Makes a corporate contribution tothe nursing, clinical practice development and strategic decision makingwithin the CSU and as a member of the wider Trust senior nursing team.

    Identify areas of clinical risk andtake preventive action including incident investigation, staff and patientfeedback and promotion of clinical audit.

    Significant experience as a senior nurse.
    Demonstrable evidence of specialist knowledge of the professional leadership and management of nurses/allied health professionals (pertaining to the area of clinical practice)
    Evidence of on-going and relevant personal and professional development in the last 2 years.

    Demonstrable experience managing clinical services and of leading improvements in clinical settings, patient care and experience across multiple specialities.

    Knowledge and experience of human resources management, communicating complex and contentious information to individuals and large groups
    Experience of managing budgets and financial resources, including the associated processes such as budget setting, financial planning and making proposals for service developments across multiple ar
    Evidence of on-going and relevant personal and professional training
    In depth knowledge of the clinical governance agenda including clinical risk and safety
    Specialist knowledge of nursing or allied health professionals professional issues and care and service delivery
    Demonstrates a clear understanding of and continuing acceptance of the need for financial governance and probity
    Takes on board the need to achieve financial balance and to operate within available resources when making day to day decisions, being prepared to take all necessary actions
    Clearly communicates the need to achieve financial targets and to operate within budget throughout their area of responsibility, ensuring consistent messages are given and ownership encouraged
    Establishes and maintains appropriate mechanisms within their area to allow comprehensive performance management in terms of financial management responsibilities and objectives
    Behaves in accordance with legislation, policies and procedures designed to ensure governance and probity and takes steps to address any issues of non-compliance within areas of responsibility
    Current registration with the NMC
    Bachelors degree in subject relevant to the role.
    Post-graduate qualification within a leadership programme/study or evidence of practical application of expertise at this level
