We are looking for a highly motivated and experienced Principal Software Developer (Computational Scientist) to develop a pipeline for genome assembly curation using machine learning.

Genome assembly is one the most challenging tasks in Bioinformatics.

The Darwin Tree of Life project at the Sanger Institute plans to produce ~70,000 whole genome assemblies and currently the bottleneck of scale-up is genome curation required with human manual inputs.

Machine learning methods will be developed to train the current available datasets such as Hi-C images and synteny information with an aim to reduce human manipulations.


About the role

You will be responsible for:

  • Lead the initiative of automated pipelines for genome curations to speed up the assembly production.
  • Lead the development of a software pipeline in assembly curation using machine learning methods and manage the currently available resources.
  • Assess the quality of the curation pipeline and provide feedback to aid the development of in-house assembly algorithms by the genome assembly team.
  • Document protocols and provide guidance to give users a better understanding of the potential and limitations of assembler tools.
  • Publish peer-reviewed papers in journals and present work in national and international conferences.

About You
You will be highly motivated and experienced computational scientist with excellent skills in C/C++ programming. Previous experiences in AI/Machine Learning will be an advantage.

  • A PhD in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, or a computational related area or related discipline
  • Highly skilled in C/C++ programming under Unix/Linux

Hybrid Working:

We have adopted a hybrid working model to allow for flexibility between office and remote working. We can discuss this further with you at interview stage.


Salary range:
£58,549 to £68,000 (dependant on skills and experience)
