Job summary:


We are looking for Policy Advisors to join the
Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation (CDEI), supporting the delivery of its programmes and project work.

The roles offer an exciting opportunity to shape some of the most important and high profile issues facing UK society today.


The Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation leads the UK government's work to enable responsible and trustworthy innovation using data and AI.

We partner with organisations across the public sector, industry and academia to develop responsible and trustworthy approaches to data and AI governance, and tackle barriers to growing innovation, around three key themes:


  • Responsible Data Access: Drive ethical innovation by making it easier for public and private sector organisations to access data responsibly.
  • AI Assurance: Provide the tools to support the development of an ethical, trustworthy, and ultimately effective AI Assurance ecosystem.
  • Algorithmic Transparency: Develop and roll out trusted mechanisms for meaningful transparency which will facilitate trusted and trustworthy uses of algorithmic tools, in the public sector and beyond.

Job description:

Some of your responsibilities in this role will include:


  • Conducting high quality research
  • understanding the impacts and risks of data-driven technology and AI across a range of contexts, using a variety of research and analysis methods, and communicating research insights in compelling and accessible ways.

Collaborating with partners and convening stakeholders - forming close and productive working relationships with actors across industry, academia, and policy, and bringing diverse stakeholders together to investigate complex issues.

Contributing to the CDEI's culture - adding to the life and soul of the CDEI, taking time out of day to day duties to ensure the CDEI is an inclusive and purposeful place to work.


Person specification:


Essential Requirements

  • Interest in the impacts and governance of datadriven technologies and artificial intelligence.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills presenting complex information in a clear, effective manner.
  • Experience generating insights and advice from a range of sources.
  • Ability to establish effective relationships with people in different roles and with varying perspectives.
  • Capable of working independently under your own initiative and some knowledge of project management.

Desirable Skills
Experience related to data-driven technology and artificial intelligence in at least one of the key areas outlined below:

  • Policy
development or delivery: experience of developing policy recommendations drawing on a range of evidence or delivering complex policy priorities.

  • Law or regulation: experience of working with relevant legal and regulatory frameworks (e.g. data protection or equality law).
  • Data and AI ecosystem: experience of stakeholder coordination in areas related to data or artificial intelligence, ability to convene multistakeholder groups and events planning, and understanding of the data and AI landscape.
  • Delivery of datadriven technology: experience working in teams delivering datadriven technology, whether in technical or product roles.
