The department


With a reputation built on years of industry expertise and a large team of specialist private client lawyers, the Penningtons Manches Cooper private client team provides innovative, clear and tailored solutions for UK and non-UK based clients.

Our services range from personal wealth management, UK and international tax planning and asset protection to advising individuals, family offices, family businesses and fiduciaries on their clients' diverse issues.

The team includes a core of traditional private client lawyers as well as specialist advisors in domestic estate planning, international tax and structuring, contentious trusts and estates, charity matters and court of protection and deputyship work.

Summary of role

Essential and desirable criteria

  • Admission to the Roll of Solicitors.
  • Experience in domestic and international private client tax and trust work.
  • Ideally a full member of STEP.

Main purposes

  • To undertake feeearning work and provide a profitable contribution to the work of the division. To contribute to the successful development of the firm in line with the team's business plan and firms' commonality of purpose.
  • To deliver a high quality technical and commercial legal service ensuring personal compliance with quality standards and professional ethics.
  • To be an ambassador for the firm at all times and always promote it in a positive light.

Main responsibilities and competencies

  • To achieve the competencies for a Senior Associate relevant to the level of experience (i.e. 5/6 years+ experience).

Matter management

  • To be able to contribute to the efficiency of matter management by being thorough, proactive and following processes and to take ownership of matters
  • To use his/her initiative to think through and research issues, identify problems and design solutions, seeking guidance or input as required, to take matters forward with the support of more junior members of the team and to seek supervision, where required.
  • To undertake personal business development and to support team initiatives. To develop new clients, maintain and support existing client relationships and to receive and reciprocate client referrals within the firm.
  • To produce detailed and accurate work, maintaining an overview of the matter.

Financial Management

  • To demonstrate financial awareness and commerciality through assisting with fee estimates for new clients and matters, assisting in the billing process, understand the impact of his/her and others' billable time on the matter, participating in the billing process as required (e.g. timely billing, chasing for payment) and financial management of matters for which they have conduct.
