The purpose of this role is to ensure that SSE Distributed Energy retains its National Electricity Registration Scheme, Project Management certifications.

This accreditation is a fundamental requirement to support the Distributed Energy business achieve its objectives.

The person filling this role should possess a strong experience of HV and LV networks, up to 33kV. Ideally, with operational experience as an SAP/AP. Knowledge of 132kV networks, would be extremely beneficial.


The role of the NERS Assessing Officer / Technical Advisor is to maintain the overarching management system, to ensure that all projects are completed safely and to the highest quality, whilst maintaining compliance with the scheme requirements.

They would be expected to ensure that all auditing requirements are being completed, by conducting technical audits of all of our sub-contractors and shall ensure constant engagement with LRQA and the project delivery teams.


Additionally, they would be responsible for overseeing all key personnel, both internally and externally, to ensure they are competent and fit the role requirements.

This includes the provision of training and acting as a mentor for Qualified Supervisors and Project Managers.


The role will require the appointed person to ensure processes, procedures, recording and monitoring was in place and regularly updated across the Enterprise businesses.


The person fulfilling this role will be expected to be appointed as a NERS Assessing Officer and NERS Technical Advisor with LRQA.


  • Maintain NERS Management System & Operational Safety Rules
  • Conduct Technical Audits
  • Facilitate Audits with Assessing Body
  • Support the development of Project Managers and Qualified Supervisors
  • When required, you must ensure any changes to Operational Safety Rules and any associated procedures are clearly understood by all relevant staff.

What do I need?
To be considered for this role, we would love you to have:

  • Ideally hold a recognised professional qualification in Occupational Health and Safety, Environment or Construction such as IOSH
  • Knowledge and experience of operational activities within underground distribution networks and substations, such as roles and responsibilities of authorised persons, safe systems of work, requirements for training, etc
  • Demonstrable solid understanding of electrical theory relating to electrical safety rules and the management of networks
  • Experience in the development of new processes and procedures in accordance with UK standards and legislation such as BS7671, the Model Distribution Safety Rules and National Electricity Registration Scheme
  • Good understanding of Lloyds Management systems, NERS risks & UK Legal framework
  • Able to determine the degree of statutory compliance and anticipate the potential impact of new legislation and provide assurance on the strength of controls to manage business risks
  • Knowledge of network and installation design, construction and operational solutions for new or modified plant and processes
  • Operational experience on LV Networks including incident investigation
  • Appreciation of the operational aspects, safe working practices, UCP safety procedures, legislation, technical reference documents that are relevant to the work.
  • Appreciation of electricity distribution networks, Model Operational Safety Rules, relevant adopting utility codes of practice, relevant areas of the Electricity, Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations.
