We are looking to recruit a highly motivated and enthusiastic Clinical Coding Manager to join the iDigital Team based at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

You will be passionate about coding, be an Accredited Clinical Coder, with leadership qualities, and enthusiasm and drive to motivate our team of coders.

You will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the coding staff with a view to the smooth running of the department to meet monthly deadlines.

The role will have responsibilities to ensure all coding is completed timely an accurately for SUS deadlines and support internal Trust deadlines.

The post holder will be a highly organised and experienced manager with a strong interest in quality management, development, and excellence in service delivery.

To manage all operational and strategic issues associated with the Trusts Clinical Coding function including day to day responsibility for management of all coding staff, providing leadership and guidance to ensure that patient activity data is fully and accurately coded within prescribed timescales, whilst adhering to national and local standards.

The Clinical Coding department abstracts clinical information from source documents and translates this into clinical codes using ICD and OPCS classification systems by means of an encoder, according to national standards.

The coded data has direct impact on Trust income and is used by Trust managers in strategic and operational decision-making processes, monitoring Trust activity and income, and negotiating contracts with commissioners.

It is also used by Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) and NHS England in planning local healthcare services, by NCS/SUS for national healthcare planning, epidemiology and public health statistics and by Trust clinicians for audit, research, and determining best practice.

To undertake the lead role on strategic coding developments across the Trusts notably in connection with ensuring the Trust conforms to the coding requirements and timeframes imposed through Payment by Results.

Although you will be employed by Alder Hey Children's Hospital, you will be supporting Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital.

We also provide specialist inpatient care for children with complex mental health needs in our recently relocated and newly opened state of the art facility.

Operationally, strategically and effective management of the Clinical Coding Service, including direct line-management and recruitment of all clinical coding staff within the Trust.

Ensure staff within the Clinical Coding Department receives individual appraisals in line with Trust policy, including formulation of personal development plans (PDPs), and that identified training and personal development are progressed, to sustain and improve individual performance using development opportunities provided by the Trust.

To ensure the Trust complies with all local and national requirements for the provision of coded activity information.
To ensure that all coding undertaken within the Trust is delivered to the required quality and timeframes.
To liaise with colleagues throughout the Trust on all issues associated with clinical coding.

To develop and implement operational and strategic plans for the Trusts coding function ensuring that these plans are aligned to the delivery of the Trusts objectives.

Develop, have ratified and implement policies and procedures within the organisation that ensure national clinical coding standards are met and best practice complied with.

Responsible for the maintenance and update of the coding system within the organisation and for ensuring that the system complies with all national requirements, initiatives and coding changes.

Raise awareness of clinical coding issues with Clinicians, Directorates, Managers and Clinical Coding Staff.

Maintain and improve communication with clinicians and Divisional Leads, Support Managers and Heads of Departments to maximise the effectiveness and efficiency of the Clinical Coding Service.

To actively maintain own levels of knowledge and skills in relation to latest coding developments.
Represent the Trust and attend external local, regional and national meetings pertaining to clinical coding as necessary.

Act as a professional lead and resource for the clinical divisions and information on all matters relating to clinical coding and casemix (HRG) information.

Maintain an up to date knowledge of all key developments in Health Informatics and clinical terminologies and classifications nationally and internationally, including contributing to research as appropriate.

As the Trusts Clinical Coding Lead attend Expert Working Groups in conjunction with the NHS DIgital Casemix and PbR organisations.

Quality

Ensure that all directions from internal and external audits are applied within the clinical coding function.

To deliver presentations and awareness to internal and external bodies on coding issues and changes to coding process, procedures, requirements and practices.

Responsible for the maintenance and update of the coding system within the organisation and for ensuring that the system complies with all national requirements, initiatives and coding changes.

Responsible for the interpretation of national guidance on coding and the reflection of national guidance in the operational workings of the clinical coding function specifically and the Trust generally.

National Accredited Clinical Coder Qualification (ACC) with post accreditation experience of accurately coding complex data in acute NHS settings.

Clinical Coding Standards Refresher Course within the last three years
NHS Digital Approved Experienced Clinical Coding Auditor
NHS Digital Approved Experienced Clinical Coding Trainer

Significant post clinical coding qualification experience at NHS Trusts.
Proven managerial experience of managing a clinical coding team
Experience of Implementation, review and undertaking of a structured coding audit programme and the writing of audit reports

Experience of coding cardiothoracic specialities

Advanced knowledge of national coding standards and conventions and their relationship to Healthcare Resource Groups and Payment by Results (PbR)
Advanced knowledge of complex medical terminology and anatomy and physiology

Management skills, proven ability to manage, motivate and develop staff
