To contribute, as part of a multidisciplinary team, to provide the scientific evidence to support Irish agriculture in meeting the requirements of the Water Framework Directive which requires Ireland to attain and sustain at least good status for all our water.

A particular emphasis will be on:

  • Conduct research on water quality mitigation in Irish agricultural landscapes with a team of catchment scientists and water quality modelling.
  • To examine the effectiveness of mitigation options for reducing onfarm nutrient loss to receiving water bodies
  • Develop data on the effectiveness of measures than can be incorporated into catchment scale models.
  • Producing policyrelevant peerreviewed scientific papers using existing and new data and disseminating the results to a wide audience
  • Translate biophysical research into policy relevance
  • To conduct a meta analysis of existing published research on N, P and sediment mitigation actions to inform what strategies will be investigated at the 'test bed'/ subcatchment/ localised scale in this phase of the programme.
  • Improving understanding on the processes of nutrient and sediment (or any other contaminant) loss to water in the agricultural landscape and the impacts on stream ecology
  • Quality assuring and analysing the data produced in the programme to assess the effectiveness of mitigation measures
  • Collaborate with other concurrent projects and programmes such as ASSAP, WaterEIP, SENSUS, AgriBirds and Measure4Water and associated partners
