    Associate Editor, Nature Briefing

    Nature, renowned as the most authoritative science journal globally, is looking for an experienced editor to join the team responsible for the daily newsletter, Nature Briefing.

    Nature Briefing serves as a roundup of science news, opinions, and analysis from Nature and beyond, carefully curated for the global scientific community.

    The ideal candidate will collaborate with the Briefing Senior Editor to research, report, and create content for the daily newsletter. They will also contribute to other subject-specific Briefing newsletters and may even lead one of the weekly newsletters. The role involves generating fresh ideas to engage our audience and attract new readers. Working alongside Nature's team of acclaimed journalists, editors, and experts in various fields, the candidate will gain insights into Nature's core audience and global news trends. This position requires efficient reporting, writing skills, meeting tight deadlines, and a passion for digital publishing and innovation. Integrity, trustworthiness, respect for readers, and a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion are essential. The individual may also be involved in producing other news or summary content for Nature.

    Responsibilities
    • Collaborate closely with the Briefing Senior Editor to report and create content for the daily Briefing, selecting key news stories, opinions, and research analysis for inclusion.
    • Support the Briefing Senior Editor in crafting subject-specific weekly Briefings.
    • Opportunity to oversee a weekly Briefing, researching content and developing weekly newsletters.
    • Handle responsibilities of the Briefing Senior Editor when absent.
    • Coordinate with the editors of Nature's magazine and journal content for selecting Briefing content.
    • Stay informed on significant scientific, scientific policy, and global current affairs.
    • Collaborate with art and multimedia teams on visuals, graphics, and multimedia content.
    • Write and edit content to ensure clarity, cohesion, and engagement under strict deadlines.
    • Create compelling headlines, standfirsts, captions, and accompanying texts.
    • Utilize digital tools for editing, posting, and publishing the Briefing.
    • Work with the Briefing Senior Editor to expand Nature's content and enhance audience engagement through innovative approaches.
    • Engage with the Chief Editor of Audience and Engagement to understand and produce captivating content for our audience, as well as attract new readers.
    • Actively contribute to team discussions, idea generation, and editorial strategy development.
    • Facilitate communication with the legal team for addressing content with legal considerations.
    • Participate in wider editorial strategy discussions across the magazine and organization, as needed.
    Experience, Skills & Qualifications

    Essential
    • Demonstrated ability to craft engaging content for a digital audience, particularly with daily deadlines.
    • Strong writing, reporting, and editing capabilities.
    • Skill in identifying news, research papers, opinions, and other content relevant to Nature's readers.
    • Excellent time management and organizational skills with a knack for meeting strict deadlines and responding promptly to breaking news.
    • Enthusiasm and basic knowledge across various scientific subjects and fields.
    • Understanding of major scientific, scientific policy, and global current affairs issues.
    • Awareness of the interests and priorities of Nature's audience, primarily research scientists.
    • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with international colleagues effortlessly.
    Desirable
    • Experience in a newsroom, preferably in a fast-paced setting.
    • Familiarity and adherence to journalistic values and best practices, including libel laws.
    • Good grasp of the international research, science policy, and funding landscape.
    • Knowledge of advancements in digital publishing and innovations.
