    The Cemeteries Team is part of West Lothian Council's Nets, Land and Countryside service and provides cemetery maintenance and burial services across 32 cemeteries and churchyards.

    The role of the Cemeteries Officer is to manage all aspects of this cemetery service across cemeteries, churchyards, and war memorials.

    The post holder will be responsible for all service related resources including budget, buildings (responsible person/key holder), tools, plant, vehicles, and staff.

    Two Cemeteries Squad Leaders will report directly to the postholder, who will also be responsible for a wider team of fourteen Cemeteries Operatives.

    The postholder will be required to ensure compliance with all relevant guidance, procedures and legislation related to the service.

    They will also manage performance and advise on the development of cemetery policy, procedures, and strategy.

    This includes drafting and presenting reports to various groups as well as investigating and replying to public enquiries and complaints.

    This postholder will be required to deal with bereaved families at their most vulnerable time, including where the council has failed to provide an acceptable level of service.

    The postholder will be required to liaise with Funeral Directors and attend occasional internments.
    The post reports to the Open Space and Cemeteries Manager.
    The post is contracted to 36 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 7.2 hours per day.

    This operational role requires the postholder to be office or site based 5 days per week, and includes extensive travel throughout West Lothian.

    Flexible working hours are available within parameters of the Policy for West Lothian Council.
