About Hiscox London Market
As an international specialist insurer we are far removed from the world of mass market insurance products.

Instead we are selective and focus on our key areas of expertise and strength - all of which is underpinned by a culture that encourages us to challenge convention and always look for a better way of doing things.

We insure the unique and the interesting. And we search for the same when it comes to talented people. Hiscox is full of smart, reliable human beings that look out for customers and each other. We believe in doing the right thing, making good and rebuilding when things go wrong. Everyone is encouraged to think creatively, challenge the status quo and look for solutions.

Scratch beneath the surface and you will find a business that is solid, but slightly contrary. We like to do things differently and constantly seek to evolve.

We might have been around for a long time (our roots go back to 1901), but we are young in many ways, ambitious and going places.

The role

Our Division forms part of the London Market operation at Hiscox and consists of an experienced underwriting team who focus on Marine, Energy and Specialty lines across the London Market including Hull and Cargo, Marine Liability, Energy, Space and Alternative Risk Portfolios.

As a high performing team, we are always looking to challenge ourselves to deliver exceptional underwriting performance and quality.

This is an exciting role and If you like a challenge you will thrive in our team

Expectations are high, but with the opportunity to support a significant line of business within the London market, this is an exciting role.

If you like a challenge and work to high standards, this could be the role for you.

Our success will be based on our ability to adapt to market conditions and outperform our competitors as we evolve the book in line with the opportunity available.

We are keen to differentiate compared to our peers in the market - we want to have the best underwriting and claims service, deliver innovative products and utilise data & analytics to help us make more informed underwriting decisions.

What you'll be doing in the role

The key to success in this role will be a detailed underwriting approach, strong relationship management and strong negotiation skills.

You will need to thrive in a business development role and be able to demonstrate a skill for working with senior brokers/clients.

You will need to support the Lead Underwriter to take ownership for relationships and be confident these lead to profitable business.

Responsibilities:

  • Supporting the Lead Underwriter in Underwriting a wide range of Cargo risks including project cargo and our market leading prelaunch offering
  • Develop and maintain close relationships with our partner brokers
  • Contribute to the development of our underwriting appetite and help refine the portfolio strategy
  • Work closely with the pricing actuaries, operational support, claims team and exposure management, to help refine the underwriting approach to deals and manage exposures

person specification:

  • An experienced Cargo practitioner
  • Excellent negotiation skills and an insatiable drive to make the portfolio highly profitable
  • Decisive in nature, displaying good judgement in decisions and taking accountability
  • A great communicator who can work with people at all levels, and are just as comfortable with clients and leaders in the industry as they are with their own team
  • Be a driven individual who demonstrates interest and enthusiasm to learn within the role
  • Demonstrate a willingness to travel internationally as required and attend evening business social events as appropriate

Diversity and Working Patterns
At Hiscox we care about our people.

We hire the best people for the job and we're committed to diversity and creating a truly inclusive culture, which we believe drives success.

We have also learned over the past 2 years that working life doesn't always have to be in the office, and now it is safe to do so we have introduced hybrid working to encourage a healthy work life balance.

This hybrid working model is set by the team rather than the business to enable you to manage your own personal work-life balance.

We see it as the best of both worlds; structure and sociability on one hand, and independence and flexibility on the other.
