Working hours:
Minimum 35 hours per week (In addition, you will be part of an on-call rota which will involve occasional weekend and evening work)


Additional salary details:
Starting salary £34, 081 per annum (London Pay Band) or Starting salary £30,429 per annum (Main Pay Band) _Eligibility for the London Pay Band will be dependent on how much time is spent at our London Headquarters _

The Salvation Army is looking for an experienced
National Communications Officer, full-time 12 Months fixed term contract, ideally based at the charity's Territorial HQ in London.

Help us promote the different ways we support thousands of vulnerable people. Our services include safe houses for victims of slavery in the UK, homeless support centres and food banks. We want you to raise awareness of what a difference we make.


As a
National Communications Officer, you will work as part of our fast-paced, busy team, promoting the work of The Salvation Army as a modern and relevant church and charity, committed to social action.


Key responsibilities

  • Promote the work of The Salvation Army in the media through traditional, digital and social media channels
  • Support the Media and key campaigns Manager and colleagues in the PR and Communications office to deliver and implement external communication strategies and insightful evaluation
  • Deliver national news stories and features to achieve national and London wide media broadcast, print and digital channel coverage
  • Develop and sustain positive relationships with national and London based media
  • Support London based Corps (community churches) with their local PR and engagement needs.
  • Draft, edit and distribute crossplatform press materials.
  • Proven media relations experience and strong national media contacts
  • Proven ability to find 'real life' stories for use in fundraising, media and campaigning materials
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines and to prioritise work under pressure
  • Ability to work flexibly within multidisciplinary teams, including outside core hours
  • Demonstrable experience of gaining extensive media coverage.
This is a fixed term position preferably based at our Headquarters currently at 101 Newington Causeway, London SE1 6BN. However, agile and work from home agreements that meet the needs of the role would be considered.

Please note that in late 2023 we will be moving to our new, modern headquarters at Denmark Hill, London, SE5 8BQ.
