The AGO is a ministerial department serving the Attorney General and the Solicitor General (the Law Officers). The Law Officers are the Government's chief legal advisers.

The Law Officers make important decisions that affect public life. Among other things, they decide whether to send criminal sentences that may be too low to the Court of Appeal; whether to open inquests into deaths (for example, the Attorney General made the decision to open new inquests into the deaths at Hillsborough); are the Government's chief legal advisors, providing advice to both the Prime Minister and Secretaries of State on a range of pressing issues touching on every aspect of daily life in the UK; and they represent the Crown Prosecution Service and Serious Fraud Office in Parliament

The Office comprises around 55 multidisciplinary, engaged and high performing team members advising and supporting the Law Officers in all aspects of their work.

We pride ourselves on our problem-solving creativity, sophisticated political and handling awareness, and smart ways of working.

  • The Law Officers also work alongside the Justice Secretary and Home Secretary to provide a more efficient, effective, and accountable criminal justice system for victims and the public.
  • The AGO comprises a highperforming, multidisciplinary, engaged, and resilient team that prides itself on our:
  • legal professional excellence and creativity;
- role and reputation;
- team spirit, ethos, and values; and
- individual development and wellbeing.

While the workload can be demanding and there may be times of pressure, the AGO is committed to staff wellbeing and ensuring colleagues have all the support and resources they need to succeed and ensuring our staff maintain a healthy work-life balance.

  • AGO
supports the Civil Service vision of being recognised as the UK's most inclusive employer, by setting stretching diversity and equality objectives for our organisation.-
Job description:The Law Officers have a unique Ministerial role: the Attorney attends Cabinet and serves as the Chief Legal Advisor to the government, ranging across government's priorities: from national security to criminal justice to trade negotiations and rights. Additionally, the Attorney and Solicitor represent the main prosecution agencies and have statutory responsibilities exercisable in the public interest.

The Diary is one of the most important aspects of Private Office and is crucial to ensuring Minister's time is used effectively and efficiently.

You will be working directly to two senior Ministers, the Attorney and Solicitor General, in a shared private office. You can expect to brief Ministers on a daily basis.

Person specification:

As diary secretary, you will be:

  • Responsible for the Ministers' diary, prioritising their time. You will be working directly with senior stakeholders across Whitehall, Parliament and senior members of the judiciary and the bar, acting as a gatekeeper when the Law Officers cannot prioritise time to meet with an individual.
  • Directly engaging with senior ministers, keeping their itineraries on track
  • Contributing to Ministerial boxes, with a daily diary card, invitations and briefings
  • Planning the Ministers' visits and events, across the UK and internationally
  • Leading the relationship with the Attorney and Solicitor's constituency teams to ensure seamless link up and prioritisation with the Ministers' nonAGO priorities.
  • Ensuring systems are in place to enable effective planning and scheduling, in particular oversight of the box and diary and ensuring officials have sufficient time to prepare for meetings.
  • You should be dedicated and motivated, with a commitment within the best tradition of Civil Service impartiality to serving our Ministers as principals.
  • You will also need to be resilient in a fastpaced environment and flexible to ministers' needs. This role provides fantastic exposure to decisionmaking at the highest level.
  • You should demonstrate impeccable organisational skills and be able to coordinate confidently but politely across organisational boundaries.
  • Experience of Parliament or Whitehall and of running a diary is preferred, but not a prerequisite.
