TENURE - PLEASE NOTE: The appointment is until 31stMarch 2024 in the first instance, at 0.2 WTE (max 1 day per week on average).


The Clinical advisor will work closely with the Antenatal and Newborn NHS Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia (SCT) Screening Programme and the Screening Quality Assurance Service (SQAS) to carry out an essential specialist clinical role in the laboratory aspects of haemoglobinopathies relevant to the SCT screening programme.

The role will include providing expert advice on UKAS reports, incidents, peer review, new science and technology and contribution to the delivery of several of the Programme's projects.

The post-holder will thereby enable the effective delivery of agreed screening objectives and support the Programme to deliver its S7A objectives.


The successful appointee will also be responsible for Chairing Programme laboratory advisory groups as required by the SCT National Programme Manager.


They will have expert laboratory knowledge and professional experience of NHS SCT linked antenatal and newborn screening pathway, and its clinical referral and treatment services.

They will support the programme's objective to provide guidance and education materials that are current and accurate

  • Programme standards
  • Patient pathway and failsafes
  • Laboratory handbooks
  • Programme handbooks

  • Endorsement of specialist training which is provided externally.


They will report to the NHS SCT National Programme Manager, and be responsible to the Director of Public Health Commissioning and Operations.


The post-holder will enable the effective delivery of agreed screening objectives and support the Programme to deliver its S7A objectives.


Key duties include the following:


  • Provide exceptional leadership and motivational skills with the ability to present views and summarise the collective opinions of the committee in a clear and concise manner.
  • Bring relevant knowledge, skills and experience to the Committee and contribute to the provision of high quality and well considered advice to NHS England.

This exciting role will require experience of laboratory leadership and expertise, coupled with knowledge of commissioning health services, an ability to operate and thrive in a complex environment, highly developed relationship-building skills and strong experience of developing and implementing effective operating models for the NHS.
