Home and Continuing Education Service is an Alternative Provision for children and young people who are not able to access their school due to their significant mental health needs.

The majority of the pupils are years 7 and above.

We wish to appoint a Higher-Level Teaching Assistant to work alongside our team of Teachers and Learning Mentors who teach Wirral-based pupils at our Base (currently at Pilgrim Street Arts Centre).

You will need a full clean driving licence and be willing to transport pupils in your vehicle (if required). The hours are casual and are up to 36 hours weekly (Term-Time only).


The duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting teachers by preparing, developing, and maintaining appropriate learning aids, materials and equipment, including ICT, to assist in teaching.
  • Teaching a class unassisted if a teacher is unexpectedly absent (ill or on leave).
  • Supporting the planning and delivering of Enrichment or other learning activities/programmes.
  • Working with individual students needing special attention.
  • Assessing student¿s progress and discussing development with teachers, parents and carers, as well as contributing to specialist assessments for students, as required.
  • Consoling students who are unwell, injured or upset.
  • Invigilating examinations as required.
  • Implementing and monitoring the provision's policies and procedures.

The ideal applicant will:


  • Understand the barriers impacting young people's learning and development.
  • Be proactive and use your own initiative to support children and young people in classrooms and on excursions.
  • Have a "Growth Mindset" and focus on the young person's potential.
  • Have experience of ACES and trauma base approaches to learning.
  • Have a thorough understanding of Safeguarding.
  • Have experience supporting young learners with SEMH /Additional needs.
  • Have a knowledge about the wider local organisations who can help.
  • Be IT literate.
