    Job overview

    The candidate will be required to take on board new skills and knowledge, and have a sensitive approach towards, patients, staff, visitors and colleagues. You will be expected to use your own initiative and work alongside the existing team members, including our medical team. If you are motivated and enthusiastic, then we are looking for you.

    This is a specialised role for Head and Neck facial skin cancers and you will be required to manage and run your own dressing and post-operative review clinics, keeping up to date with the latest skin cancer guidelines and treatments. For this the applicant will have good knowledge and experience of at least 2 years post registration. Nurse prescribing, dermoscopy and clinical examination are essential to role and funding has been identified for this.

    You will work as surgical assist in minor operations theatre as well as performing your own skin biopsy list.

    Other general duties will include

    • Preparing theatre for Minor Operation sessions and assisting the operator.
    • Preparing clinic rooms and house-keeping duties
    • Acting as a co-ordinator on the arrival of patients to the department.
    • Attend MDT meetings
    • Liaising with other wards, departments and Trusts, as required.
    • We require a motivated, enthusiastic person who will be sensitive and caring

    Willing to work flexible hours and to work across sites, as the service dictates. The post holder will be required to cross sites between Burnley General and Royal Blackburn as needed

    Main duties of the job

    Provide nurse-Led Clinics for OMFS patients, within agreed guidelines and protocols. This will involve clinical assessment through clinical examination skills, history taking and non-medical prescribing and recommending treatment.

    • Assess, plan, implement & evaluate the effectiveness of treatment plans within agreed guidelines, protocols and Standard operating procedures. Working collaborative within the MDT.
    • Use of diagnostic tools such as dermoscopes for assessing skin lesions and prescribing and referring for appropriate treatment. Listing for biopsy or referring to Consultant for further management.
    • Provide assistance to the clinician for minor operative procedures performed in the outpatient department.
    • Perform skin biopsies for diagnostic purposes within scope of professional practice and competence.
    • Provide advice and wound care for patients with complex wounds such as skin grafts.
    • Provide a follow up service for patients either in the OPD setting.
    • Will prescribe or de-prescribe medications within their scope of practice and competency for patients in their care.
    • To provide and receive highly complex , sensitive information

    Detailed job description and main responsibilities

    The post holder is responsible for the assessment of care needs and the development of programmes of care and/or the implementations of these programmes for patients who attend the service that have been referred with skin cancer. Carry out all relevant forms of care without direct supervision and may be required to demonstrate procedures to supervised and unsupervised qualified and/or unqualified staff.

    He or she may be required to take charge of any of the Head and Neck Outpatient Department s across ELHT, in the absence of the person who has continuing responsibility of the department.

    Ensure that he or she adheres to all trust policies, particularly in relation to confidentiality and professional behaviour.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    A Registered General Nurse on Part 1 of the register of the NMC. Experience of out-patients work - minimum 2 years. Experience of Oral Surgery, ENT, some knowledge /experience of skin cancers management and managerial skills- minimum 2 years

    ROLE

    ASSESSOR

    1.1 Maintains accurate clinical observations of the patient's condition.

    1.2 Interpret the significance of data of the patients condition and progress.

    1. PLANNER of nursing care

    2.1 Promote the efficient running of clinics on an out-patient basis to keep out patient waiting times in line with agreed guidelines.

    2.2 Identify the priorities of nursing care for patients.

    2.3 Identify realistic goals in out-patient care.

    2.4 Organise time, equipment and staff to deliver nursing care.

    2.5 To delegate duties to staff in accordance with the nursing competencies ensuring a high standard of care.

    1. PRACTITIONER of nursing

    3.1 Give skilled care to patients and relatives.

    3.2 Administer drugs and treatments as prescribed with safety, accuracy and intelligence within the Trust Policy.

    3.3 Communicate effectively with patients, their relatives and co-workers.

    3.4 To exercise and promote good interpersonal relationships.

    3.5 Liaise with medical, para-medical staff and social workers in the delivery of care.

    3.6 Ensure patients receive a high standard of care in accordance with Trust

    Policy and Procedure

    3.7 Assist the doctors with out-patient procedures and minor operations

    3.8 Act as chaperone to patient and doctors during out patient consultations,

    and minor operations

    3.9 Assists the Sister in ensuring the individual patients are assessed and that care is planned to meet their handling and moving needs.

    3.10 May be required to act as a Trainer or Risk Assessor in Moving and Handling.

    6.6 Advise members of the public on the promotion of health and prevention of illness. Promoting department activity.

    6.7 Actively involved in Health Promotion and current Health Promotion Campaigns.

    6.8 Offer recognised training and participate in the training and assessment of support workers.

    1. MANAGER of nursing

    7.1 To act as a team leader providing staff with direction and supervision.

    7.2 Assess work to be carried out.

    7.3 Organises self , time and equipment for completion of work.

    7.4 Supervise the delivery and quality of care given to patients on an out patient basis.

    7.5 Reports and receive reports of work activity.

    7.6 Co-ordinate the care given by nurses, medical, para-medical staff and social workers.

    7.7 Handle complaints by patients, members of the public and staff in accordance with the Trust's Policies.

    7.8 Maintain standards in accordance with the Trust's Policies.

    7.9 Assist Sister to maintain effective stock control i.e. stores, HSDU, equipment, replacements.

    7.10 Participate in some clerical duties within the department i.e. arrangement of appointments, outcome lists, management of the waiting times for

    patients attending for a referral to the skin service

    7.11 To lead in unit meetings in the absence of Sister.

    7.12 To assume delegated responsibilities of the Sister and act up as required.

    7.13 To Work flexible hours which may include evenings, weekends and

    Bank Holidays.
